Reading about the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition last night....
As relates to Malcolm. He's at the "novice" level:
As such, should behave according to the following principles...
* "rigid adherence to taught rules or plans" * no exercise of "discretionary judgment"
So...
Draw a box (about half the size of the key) under the basket FU is defending. Tell him he's never allowed to leave it on defense. Also, tell him he's never allowed to jump in the air unless going for a rebound. He can raise his arms, but NO jumping.
Those rules, alone, would probably make him a significantly more effective defensive player. Once has that stuff down - we can move to the "advanced beginner" stage.
