nh, don't read too much into my comments. Only watched him play once (Red-White scrimmage) and there was nothing really special about his play that day. And I just haven't heard much else one way good or bad. So I really don't know about him. But his D-1 career is just starting so certainly he could turn out to be a very effective player.

I thing the situation is 2-fold. One is that Threatt seems to be having difficulty adjusting to Division I defenses, and probably needs more time to figure that out. Secondly, is that he certainly is behind StevieJ a and Tyler Nelson on the depth chart at 2G...... Both of who have been playing better offensively and have been 2 players that seem like starters. And he is also behind KJ Rose and Rome Segura as a PG and as a defensive player.
I had expected Threatt would have provided more immediate impact because he was a JUCO, but he has not. However, I do think that he might eventually be our best 1-on-1 guard. He certainly seems to have a lot of talent.
BTW, I feel that Rome Segura is a very good defensive player.
I think there is tremendous upside potential for Rome, was impressed by how smooth he is, ability to penetrate, and having great court sense. He almost threw a backcourt alleyooop to marcus, off just a bit. Although a couple of his passes were off some, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. I'd like to see him take more shots, especially when he's open from the outside. Sydney should start him at point guard.

I also would like to see Rome Segura start because of all the qualities you have mentioned, but I also think Rose, Nelson, and StevieJ should get starters minutes too. I see all of them rotating at the PG, 2G, and 3G (I think that we will go with a 3G line-up for 10-15mpg). All bring different strengths to the table, but I do think certain combo's might work better than others, because the backcourt has to have "BALANCE" from a lot of different dimensions:
I don't care who starts, but I do care who finishes and plays the most minutes dependent on the game cirmcumstances. And while StevieJ has played great so far this year, I really do think he is better coming off the Bench in an "Instant Offense" position. I also want Nelson out their vs Zones and when they are fouling us, I want "Rome and Rose"out there when we have a lead and need defense and physical play or even to handle the press. And when we really need offense/quickness/shooting, I would really like to see Nelson at the 3G, Marcus at the 4, with StevieJ at the 2G and maybe even Threatt at the PG.

Bringing in a JUCO who isn't an immediate top 6-7 player is a scary. When a kid averages 20plus per game and gets limited recruiting interest, our excitement should be tempered.
Also, when Threat, Smith, and Chappell don't get minutes in an exhibition, something else is up.
We have a strong and tough combo guard who can defend and post up.
A pure point guard who could be a special player. A 2/3 who can score and could become a special player too And a shooter, a real shooter and the only upper-classman.
Ghostman, 79, half empty-half full. Very good representation of the feelings of hardcore Stag supporters. Get ready for the fireworks to begin!
The bottom line is that there is tremendous competition for guard playing time, and the great thing is that the competition is among players that are playing very well..... not like last year when we actually played portions of some games with only 1 guard, and he was a frosh (KJ). I would even go as to say if we had to go with our 3rd string and 4th string Guards this year (Threatt and Chappell), then they would be better than what we had last year.
Good Guard play = more wins Great guard play = MAAC Championship
RF, unfortunately I am having all kinds of problems with my computer (it threatens to shut off at any minute), so I will try to be brief by responding to one main point, that being that we have indeed improved the guard situation greatly with Segura and Nelson. Indeed just the fact that Segura looks good (as you have noted) makes the backcourt better than last year. And trust me Tyler will make a difference. Still a mystery why he didn't play but I do know the staff thinks very highly of what he has done so far this fall. To be truthful I'm not so sure what we are going to get from Threatt (no glowing reports yet) or Chappell. But when Nelson does get back in there, a rotation of KJ, Jerome, Stevie J. and Nelson will certainly be better than what we had last season IMO.
Nashville - Its hard to imagine we could get worse guard play than last year, and I agree completely about Segura. By all appearances Segura enters Fairfield more ready to contribute that anyone on last year's squad. So while we only have a limited sample size I agree chances are we will be better at guard. Still we didn't see much of the improvement at guard last night because Threat and Nelson never left the bench. Lets give Sydney the benefit of the doubt and assume Nelson was under the weather last night and when the season opens he's going to be a contributor. So if we have two solid freshman guards along with Rose and Johnston, we are improved at that position. We should also be improved at Center with the experience Gilbert and Sidibe have gained and the addition of Degnan. We are no worse at the three with Gilbert and Smith returning and both looking as good or better than last year. So about the only position we may not be improved at is the 4 as I don't think anyone we put out there will give us the court presence we had in barrow. So while I feel with certainty we are improved, I am not confident yet that we are improved enough. Nothing I saw last night made me think "top 5 MAAC squad". I saw lots of things that needed to be worked on and failure to make in game adjustments.
I don't want to be negative about the team, its too early and we haven't seen enough. I was just hoping to see a little more than we did of the new guards and I walked out of the stadium perplexed that we didn't give more players a test drive.
1. Johnston has been a grinder and has worked hard to remain a part of the equation. I have the utmost respect for the kid. Thought he should have gotten more time 2 years ago and last year. Seems like the coaches have come around. He has talent at this level and it should be USED and not wasted.
Captain? Shouldn't a kid that people respect, has a work ethic, has enthusiasm, has experience, be a Captain?
2. Living and dying by the 3 - UB was a great night of shooting for the Stags. Expect a ton of pressure on the perimeter going forward. Then, we will see how good this team really is.
3. Excited about the TALENT... Now, we need to see this TEAM develop an IDENTITY and a DRIVE to win. I LOVED this quote - "We've all got a chip on our shoulder," Steve Johnston, who didn't miss a shot all night, said. "Last year was embarrassing. We're not going to let that happen again." DIRECT & DRIVEN... Hope the TEAM rallies around that SPIRIT!

I agree that we don't want to live and die by the three, but we only took 21 three-pointer, thats just few more than the national average. And most of our players do have a balance between inside and outside. The only 2 players that I would consider as strictly three-point shooters would be Stevie Johnston and Steve Smith. Each of those players made only 1 two-pointer all of last year. Both of those need to expand their game to so that we don't have that " ton of pressure on the perimeter going forward" that you talked about.
Looking at the minutes played, it looks like we played a 3-guard offense for 9 minutes versus Bridgeport. Thats good, because last year we never enough good guards to play 3 guards. And in those those 9 minutes, they just happened to be one of our most productive portions of the game, when we wet on a 20-8 run...... changing the score from a 5-10 deficet to a 25-18 lead. The 3 guards were Segura, Rose and StevieJ. So I want to see more of the 3-guard line-up. And if we look at the last 13 minutes of the half, which included the 9 minutes of the 3 guard offense, we outscored Bridgeport 31-12..... Wow. So who was on the court during that time.
Rose - on the court the entire time Rome - 12min Kirkland - 9min StevieJ - 8 min Degnan - 7 min Marcus - 5 min Coleman - 5 min Amadou - 3 min Malcolm - 3min
Good to see how well the team played with Degnan on the court. And "Rome and Rose" combo was very effective..... thats what happens when we have 2 players that can penetrate. But they need to paired with 1-2 other shooters.... StevieJ, Nelson, Marcus.

Z, love your point about Stevie J. being named Captain! I made this query in a previous post. Really though I think he is thought of such whether they officially name him or not. They are so secretive on things. I seem to remember last year when it was revealed AFTER it ended that Mo was also considered in that position even though Amadou was the publicly named person. But as far as your points on the 3s and the dependence on them, yes there will be some nights when they are not falling at the rate of the other night, but truthfully with the amount of threats on this team I would hope those nights would be the exception rather than the rule. However the real key to success in this area is creating wide open "good" looks from the arc, and that should happen with good penetration and passing, and also (as you say) in how they are able to use the pressure on the perimeter to their advantage by scoring closer to the basket.
