stagal - - regarding nolan deep down i think, after 1 year of red shirting, and 1 year of being in the " system " he will be nothing like the kid you now see at prep. how many back court kids have gone over the side in the last 2 years ? including the vaunted jc guard that has recently vanished from the program.
I've always considered Billy Jones to be one of, if not the best, ALL AROUND player in Stag history. My memory of him was in bringing the ball up, great dribbling and passing, breaking the press, shooting, rebounding, etc. He did it all and was unselfish. So in that respect I see Tommy Nolan playing a very similar role to the Prep team. I can only hope that Tommy will bring those same intangibles and skills with him to the Stags.

Stagal, absolutely right about Jones. Maybe the BEST EVER ALL AROUND. But if not for only being an average shooter he would have had an NBA career for a few years IMO. So yes, Nolan's style of play might be similar (on a high school level), so I understand your thinking. But please, Billy Jones was BIG TIME (and would be today), and to suggest Thomas would have the same effect down the line as a collegiate player might be a bit premature I would think. But I certainly hope you are right!
This redshirt idea was floated very early: before the season turned into such a rescue job. I'm sure Nolan is bright, so possible "redshirt" reasoning is something Sydney is keeping close to his vest. It is unlikely to truly be "to get stronger" in that Nolan is already playing against college-bound talent in the top 10 CT Class LL HS's. Maybe it is to open a scholarship for a big, or maybe SJ felt Rose and Rome were cemented in for next year, so why waste a year of Nolan being played sporadically as back-up? Could be that this was also accepted by Nolan in that he could pursue a master's with the additional year.
Until we see more of what Smith and Chappell can do, I think Syd needs to rethink who he might be pressuring out with his lack of attention. I think Rose is one lucky guy right now. We know Sydney can be extremely stubborn in changing his approach and Rose seems to be enjoying anointed status.
Stagparty, for your info, unfortunately the competition that Nolan is playing against this season is almost completely devoid of real D-1 talent. Not necessarily so however if you're talking D-2, D-3. It's kind of sad, but most of the truly gifted players in Connecticut are leaving the state association (CIAC) on a yearly basis. Therefore this weakens the product as a whole. The one and only BIG-TIME player left this season is Mustopha Herron of Sacred Heart of Waterbury, a junior who has verballed to Pittsburgh. But sadly there will be no competition between Prep and the Hearts this season because the latter will play in the Class S division in the state tournament . This is an outrage (that SH is playing in the smallest division), but it is what it is unfortunately. BTW these two teams did indeed scrimmage with each other before the start of the year, and to be fair, Herron was clearly the better player that day.
