our offense looked horrible. colin couldn't hit a shot outside of 5 feet (and you could tell he was getting frustrated) this team will go as far as wade, barrow and needham (in that order) will take them.

Unfortunately, I didn't notice any "flashes of brilliance" from the freshmen. I fear that our 6th place preseason ranking is probably right on target - could be a long season.
I agree on Steve Johnson getting a few minutes per game to see how he does. I think he has earned himself a shot at it.
I agree on the Jenkins "Deer (or rather, Stag) in the headlights" comment. I was not impressed by anything that I saw out of any of the freshmen.
We are REALLY going to miss Rakim this year. Derek, Des and Colin running around really fast is all fine and good, but in the end, I hope that they don't end up just spinning their wheels.
I'm hoping for some better plan at the exhibition game next week.
In Colin's defense, the stats show that his shooting has improved every year. I don't think anyone will mistake him for Shane Miller, but the numbers have improved. If he can shoot 35% from 3 (which shouldn't be too big of a stretch) he could become very valuable.
I agree with Stagman on this. Nickerson is never going to be a 40% 3 point shooter but if he can just raise his average from .321 to .350 he'll be doing enough to keep the defense honest. I think that's very achievable given how much he has improved since his freshman year. He's not a natural shooter, he's game is built off off his defense and his quick first step. I think he can average 8-10 points a game by beating his man to the basket and making an occastional outside shot.
I think Gilbert should be able to help. Hopefully Mikulic and Johnson will also be able to plug some holes. Watching Mikulic shoot in warmups he was pretty smooth for a 7footer. If they can't help us, 6th place will be in jeopardy...
I know it's very early and just a scrimmage. I get that. And I'm not throwing in the towel, not by a long stretch. Just frustrated because I expected a much better report, especially about our freshmen. Since two of them (three if you count Van Nes) didn't even suit up, I guess I shouldn't have hoped for better. I wasn't there, but there just seemed to be a lot of bad omens in the various posts, injuries, bad outside shooting, deer in the headlights look, lowering of expectations. This is the beginning of the season where hope springs eternal, right? And I'm already in a funk. There will be plenty of time for that during the season. Certainly sounds like we are a work in progress. In Sydney We Trust. Sorry for dumping my baggage on the board like this. I'll try to be more positive and upbeat. GO STAGS!
This season has some elements of rebuilding, we will try to win with our seniors and start to get the others ready for next year. Mike Van Schaick had that Deer in the Headlights look when he arrived at Fairfield and was all Maac by his senior year. I just hope these freshman are fully developed as sophomores as they are going to need to play next season (and in some cases this season).
