Would you like a coach who brings in recruits like Tyler Nelson and Mike Kirkland (2 of our top 3 scorers)? How about a guy who is extremely personable with everyone in the community and out on the recruiting trail? I know i would. I am still at a loss for words on how this administration is handling the program. Having been around the game and having known Coach Bahar for years, I am disgusted with the way this has unfolded. Not having Coach is a big loss. The state of the ball team is directly a result of decisions Johnson has made on the court yet we are letting quality coaches like Bahar go from the staff.

There is comfort in knowing they will have run out of excuses next season. With every loss, the heat will be turned up.
The pressure is mounting even with the season over. Can you imagine if we fail to sign irrefutable above-average recruits or impressive new assistants? What then? It will be a miracle to turn the same seven win team into a contender.
Yes Stagdown, the new assistant must be all of that. And he should be of such high quality and experience that he can take the head coach position the following year.

Who would sign if we don't even have a staff? I would think they would want to find replacements for the assistant coaches with as much urgency as new recruits.
Serious question. Who is the easier sell? A new assistant or recruit?

The job is a tough sell if there if we are competing with another program - odds are that FU won't turn it around and SJ will be gone - it's 1 one year gig knowing that you'll probably fail. I said it before - SJ should look for an ex-NBAer who wants to get into coaching. He could sell kids on that. The ex-NBAer will always have that on the resume and a one and done wont hurt that.

Whoever they bring in, they better have CONNECTIONS (and positive ones) with many high school and AAU coaches. And especially with hot hoops urban areas such as NYC, NJ, etc. Maybe a fairly young guy who has coached in high school and AAU, been successful, but might be looking to get in the door as a D-1 assistant. That may be the way to go here considering the situation. It wouldn't hurt if they had coached an immediate prospect who was better than average and who might come in right away. Sometimes one or two important players can make a HUGE difference.

Seriously, its not a question of what do we want but what can we get? The new coach has to look at this as a one year gig. We don't get anyone that has another offer. Its got to be a Friend of Syd's or someone who has no job and nothing to lose. So a former head coach (not mitch but demographically like Mitch) or a young up and comer is what you want. Or you want someone like Jim Baron who brings a recruit (like his son) with him.
As far as getting a good recruiter, I don't think it matters. Recruiting for this year will be over before the new hire starts. The coach won't be around by the end of next year and we risk losing any recruits he signs anyway.
There was no point to releasing these assistants at this point in the process, they should have been retained at least until this recruiting season was over. I guess the only point was to save a few months salary that could be applied against the buy out next season.
But Syd probably would not have tampered with the staff if one was close to a really promising recruit. That said, our prospects at the time probably weren't very solid with highly regarded recruits.

Recruiting isn't over! My hunch is that Sydney is going to make an all-out pitch to save next season by bringing in at least one if not more 5th year guys. Maybe even another JC, but after this last season he might be more hesitant in this area. But there is still time to bring in much needed late help. It is done by many schools all the time.
Listen, things are ugly, but there is always a chance. Think people are getting a bit draconian.
We have: Nelson, Gilbert, and Kirk next year...
We have up and comers: Segura and Degnan
And still think Smith and Coleman can be solid role players, too.
But, as I keep reiterating (and I will be more explicit here), Syd needs to take some responsibility or I will not support this 2nd chance. And, that is what it is, let's not beat around the bush.
We will definitely go after 5th year seniors. Justin Harris of Providence just declared that he is leaving Providence. Cooley must have thrown him under the Bus. Also teams like Depaul and Alabama just fired their coaching staff, and I would hope that our fine Jesuit counterpart in Chicago will send us some players or coaches.
Expect HS coaches and AAU coaches to be interested.

Joe Stag, if a player graduates, that is not considered " throwing him under the bus". Why the need for a derogatory remark about Ed Cooley? He has twice the class of our current coach.
