At Fairfield, Reed leads and manages the university’s largest non-academic division. As the principal advisor to Fairfield president Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J., he is the senior officer of the university and its leadership team, and has been responsible for the execution of multiple strategic plan initiatives. In addition, he has directly solicited and received funding commitments at all levels, including a recent $10 million gift to expand and modernize the campus recreation complex.....

It will be interesting to see who the University gets to replace him? Hopefully someone who is pro athletics (and deals with Alumni Hall) or at least understands the importance of athletics and the condition of the on campus facilities.

I always believed that a Jesuit should lead a Jesuit university. It appears that the pool of Jesuits is so small that laymen are now being interviewed for a university's most important position. A real shame!

Congratulations to Mark, well deserved. He certainly embodies the Jesuit thinking and approach to education.
As Mark has been the recipient of my letters when I've become frustrated with the university regarding the on-campus arena and the recent direction of the men's basketball program, I'll probably have to write directly to FVA (if needed) as writing to GD is pointless. Always appreciated that Mark took the time to respond to concerned alumni regarding the athletic program, he seemed to understand the perspectives whether you agreed with him or not.
Mark certainly seemed to have the trust of FVA. Related to Fairfield, if we're hoping for bold steps in the future regarding the athletics program, this leadership change may be an issue of a concern. A new guy may be a bit cautious regarding big decisions. We need the opposite approach.

Good luck to Mark. I know the St Joes alumni have been pretty tough as of late on their administration.
I obviously haven't been thrilled with the administration particularly when it come to athletics. I don't know if that was Reed / von Arx or the Trsutees that really had the ultimate say. It will be interesting to see how their alumni react because hoops is king there.
Mark Reed becomes the 8th President of a Jesuit university who is not of the Jesuit order:
In 2001, trustees at Georgetown — the country’s oldest Roman Catholic university — selected John DeGioia, an alumnus, as its first lay president. He became the first lay person to lead any of the country’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities.
As of July 1, 2013, seven of the 28 schools in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities will have lay presidents.
Among the 194 U.S. Catholic colleges that belong to the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, 63 percent are led by lay people. That number is up from about 50 percent in 2001, and 30 percent in 1991....
Congrats to Mark Reed, and well deserving. A loss for Fairfield as he was a big supporter of Basketball and sports in General. Plus he is a St Joes guy.
St. Joe's alumni have been waiting with bated breath for this announcement. Martelli is in the last year of his deal and wants a big extension for at least three more years. The Board of Trustees told him they were tabling the decision until the new President was named. I would say that the majority of the alumni want Phil gone. SJU also needs to hire a Provost, CFO and a couple other senior positions, so Phil may need to get to the back of the line. Should be interesting what develops over the next few months.
Good luck to Mark. Fellow Prepper and I met him at an incoming Freshman BBQ for Philly area students back in the early 90's. If that makes you feel old......

Of the 28 Jesuit colleges/universities in the United States (AJCU) , there are now 10 without a Jesuit President - Canisius, Le Moyne, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Marquette, Rockhurst (Catholic priest but not a Jesuit), St. Peter's, St. Louis, Detroit Mercy.
