3 new guys that have been on campus for a while .... JJ, Cobb, and King. Cobb could get starter minutes, King would seem to be a 15-20mpg player. Don't know on JJ, but he could be the 1st guard off the bench, and could play all 3 guard positions.

What happened to the year of Prep School for Nolan? I never understood it so welcome Tommy! Better do well, StagAl's rep is on the line.
Nolan was never going to go to prep school. It was announced from the beginning that he would enroll at Fairfield but would sit out first year. And at least at this time nothing has changed in that regard. He probably WILL NOT be playing this season.

Why? What's the rationale of not playing?
Well of course I can't answer for Sydney. I do think however that he was projecting a much better situation at guard than what has actually occurred what with the failures and subsequent subtraction from the team of KJ and Chappell, etc. Now replacements are here in Cobb and Johnson. But will that be enough? Also think they figure a year of maturity would make Tommy a much better player after sitting out a year as I don't think he projects as one who would make an immediate impact such as Tyler did or Cobb in particular might be able to. Situation is fluid however and subject to change depending on how certain things go during the summer.
Gets you to at least wonder as we hope for the best of the new season as well as players coming in. Hearing the upside of these players as they come in as freshman from successful high school careers. who will Sydney be looking to blame or get rid of by next year. Its really a consistent scenario he has used every year..

There are no more excuses. He owns it. His predicament is HIS own making.
If I were Gene I would start my list of candidates early. It's simply smart ---just in case.
Let off the brakes Syd! Teach aggression! Stop over-analyzing!! And when we have a lead, stop playing 'not to lose'!
Activating Nolan now may not be a bad thing as a last resort. Maybe he isn't quite ready in skills, but he has the swagger and intensity that others could learn from him.

If Nolan isn't good enough to have an immediate impact, then why did we have to sign him early?
Was anyone else even recruiting him?
Va., he was getting mid-level D-1 recruitment. Can't name particular schools right now but I do believe a few MAAC schools were involved including Quinnipiac and Iona. Were others recruiting him hard or just showing "interest?" I can't really say right now. Look, the kid does have a lot of ability to do many good things on the court. And he also plays with an exceptional passion and will to win, a trait which might become infectious with the rest of the team in the future. I have seen him many of times in his play for Prep. I have refused to call him a future "star," but that is my opinion. But I do think he is a legit D-1 player who would certainly help the Stags, especially with a good roster of players. Sort of like the role that Jamel Fields was able to do in his time at Fairfield. On the other hand there are a couple out there (especially our friend Stag-AL) who thinks he could have an immediate impact. I would love to be proven wrong! But again, it's not like the Stags were the only program that would take him. And BTW it doesn't hurt that they can get a "local" player from a school that has now produced a D-1 player from the last 3 years running (Tarpey, Chukwu and Nolan), and may have another one in Pat Harding in another couple of years.

Its no secret that I am not Sydney's number 1 fan, but honestly I think any criticism of Sydney regarding his handling of Nolan is unfounded. Sydney has signed a kid who has a lot of potential to develop and contribute to the program. He has done it without giving up a guard scholarship for next year so he has had the option to bring in another good guard if he can. If he can't he can have Nolan play next year or he can continue with the original plan. I really think the Nolan situation could not have been handled better so far. I share everyone's concerns that this could be a train wreck before it ends, but so far, I think the criticism of SJ on Nolan is without merit.....
PS I've seen Nolan play and I love the kid. I also think he needs another year of development and could benefit from the redshirt season.
Agree, the plan for Tommy Nolan would seem best for him having a successful college career. I assume he's working out with everyone else right now, and with a full year of scrimmages, shooting drills and strength work, he'll be better prepared to contribute as a sophomore.
And I guess as a walk on he could be called on for the upcoming season if we lose a guard to injury -- lets hope not! We also have soph Jared Harper as an invited walk on. Not sure if there are higher expectations for him after receiving only courtesy minutes last year. But if we don't bring in a post-grad player then Nolan or Harper will most certainly be called upon for minutes.

I think we will see Nelson or Cobb for Backup PG duties before Nolan or Harper get a shot. Plus Jerry Johnson will compete with Segura for PG regular minutes. The chances of another PG being added to the roster is becoming slimmer each day. The coaches have the chance to see Nolan play vs college competition, and if he is the best, he should play.
