Lot of talk before the season about lack of player improvement under Sydney. Well five games in, while still a relatively short sample, certainly shows better play from all four of the returning players who are playing major minutes. Indeed Marcus, Tyler, Jerome and Coleman have all stepped up their game in many areas, and that in combination with the play of the newcomers has been a big reason why the Stags have been showing signs of life that has been missing these last two years, Can't rate the progress of Mike, Kevin and Steve of course, because they have been beaten out for playing time. But that has indeed been a legitimate criticism of SJ until now. However I think it is real important and a great sign for the team and the program that things may be turning in the right direction here. Hopefully this is just the start of a positive trend in this area!

So far the sample is pretty small. I think its a little premature to say that any players have improved greatly. I think the improvement in Gilbert and Coleman is fairly minor and not yet as dramatic as we saw from other players in past years. From a shooting perspective Nelson's numbers are way down over last year, I think its simply because the sample size is so small. I think the numbers will level out. In my view the notable improvement has come from Segura, how much credit Sydney deserves for that I just can't say.
The play of the team is really encouraging but I think the play of the freshman is the number one reason for this. We have had 4 players make an impact so far, that's more than you can usually hope for..

Doesn't have to score 30 to show he is improved. Each game he is doing what we need to WIN. Sometimes rebounding more, last night ball handling more, hitting foul shots and big threes.
" nelson off " the kid was the only guard on the floor for a long stretch, and his back was on the floor for a long stretch as well. how many minutes did he play ? did his clutch foul shots go down at the end ?

Nelson is much more of a complete player this year, and to see him take charge in crunch time is huge. His shot will come around and that will now make him a very dangerous player. And a future All-MAAC player. Much of his shooting woes are because he has had to be responsible for PG duties when foul trouble or injury occurs. Thats a lot to undertake, when he really has not played a lot of PG as a player. But eventually that will make him better as a 2G and "Lead Guard"
Its great to see a player like that mature before our Eyes.

I also believe his shooting will come around. His shooting woes in my mind are due to a variety of factors. 1) Since he has the ball he has to create his own shot too much rather than coming off screening and getting his feet set 2) He is playing a lot of minutes and is tired. 3) He is distracted with trying to do a lot of other things including adjusting to the point guard duties.
Nelson is a great player, no one has lost any confidence in him. But he is going to need to score for this team to be everything we hope it will be.
I'm hoping that other players will pick up their scoring since with only 4 guards and injuries and fouls Nelson is going to have to continue all his duties and he is going to be tired.
