In almost every press conference this season, Hurley has credited Murray and Young and mentioned how baffled he is that they aren’t head coaches. He’s also conceded that they’re paid well enough and talented enough to wait for the perfect situation. If Murry and Young are eager to run their own program, they don’t have to jump at the first opportunity.
“I don’t know who is doing these things right now, if I’m a high-major school,” Hurley said. “Forget the lows; you can’t take those jobs. It would have to be the best mid-major job in the country for those guys to leave. We’ve got the resources to take care of them. But I don’t know how you’re the best mid-major program in the country or a high-major program and not wanting your program to look like our program right now. Because if you hire one of those guys, that program is going to look like this program.”

He might be great. He might be mediocre. Who knows? Every national champion has a few assistant coaches.
Why does this thread pop up every year? Especially this year of all years. Haven't we drilled it into the ground by now?
Agree Who knows what kind of head coach anyone will be. I like the guy we have now. Don’t need to chase after shiny objects. Don’t know Luke at all. But he’s a top assistant at a two-time national champion, would seem like he doesn’t need to wait on an offer from his Alma mater.

We have the right person for the job. At least we won't be out coached. We may be "out-personelled" (if that is a word) but in these times only time will tell.

Times are changing and I am not sure for the best. The old model of a D1 assistant of a P5 conference team taking over a mid-major H/C job rather then remaining as an assistant may be broken. There are very good salaries available for assistants at P5 schools often as much or even more then a mid-major. The allure of becoming a H/C at a mid-major has become diminished and has changed because of the portal and requirement for NIL$$. Becoming a H/C , developing a mid-major program and players into a consistent winner over a 4-5 year period is gone for good. Leaving a good assistant job and becoming a H/C at a mid-major was always risky. These days it is even more so.
I would say it's still a great job and there aren't that many of them... but you're absolutely right. It's a whole different job than it used to be. It's more like a GM.
Correct, I am one of them. I lead to google it to find out😁
Sorry.
Meant that comment for the other thread about Fairfield's portal approach, actually.
I expect there is a LOT of unrequited "expressed interest" from non-major schools to desirable players. If you're a "Ryan Gosling" of college basketball programs (UCONN)... you can probably pick and choose which portal-ers you want to make contact with... knowing your almost certainly going to get a response.
On the other hand... if you're a "Jonah Hill" program (Fairfield)... you probably have to be a little more aggressive and scattershot in those initial contacts and then focus on the positive responses. Probably need to be a little more patient, too.

I would have extended Casey as Fairfield did. I like Chris, I think he earned his shot. My point, and I think what others may be trying to say is, I would not have hired Young. Murray was my choice. He could have been a spectacular failure or a great coach. We won't know for sure what would have happened. But I continue to believe we would have gotten better results from Luke than we got from Young.
Even though I was in the Luke Murray camp, I am in full support of the Casey decision. The situation right now is quite different than it was 4 years ago.
