In reality, they made a bad decision. Instead of giving the co-captain control of the ship. They brought in a new coach who is steering us further and further away from the promised land. Siena went with the co-captain of their ship and it didn't end all that well. Hiring the right guy is part skill but also a matter of luck. Its hard to question the decision to bring on Johnson, the decision was viewed positively by nearly everyone around the program, I didn't see anyone really criticizing the decision when it was made. Fairfield got a guy with great pedigree and proven D1 coaching experience. It seemed like a pretty safe bet that he would have success at Fairfield. I think Fairfield was lucky to get Cooley. I mean luck had everything to do with it not skill. By all accounts Barry Rohrssen was GD's and everyone else's first choice. We reportedly settled in getting a second assistant in Ed Cooley and that decision was criticized in some circles while Manhattan was praised for their ability to get the better coach. Things didn't play out as people expected. So I am not at all critical of the SJ decision it seemed a good one. I am very critical of the extension he was offered, it was offered prematurely and not based on good enough results..

Fairfield as a player should be a place you want to play and stay .. Not play and leave. Doesnt anyone see that

You're absolutely right RF, the extension was baffling to me at the time, and certainly now it is coming back to haunt the program. Why were they so quick to do this?

I agree that he had a good pedigree and looked good on paper. I too am critical of the extension prior to seeing results. He's still got 5 years to really run this place into the ground. Maybe the team will be so bad that Harbor Yard will kick us out? If attendance falls further than it has, opening the doors and staffing the arena and the electricity probably makes it a losing proposition. 5 more years with sid at the helm, we will be playing our home games in the walsh athletic center in front of a crowd of 0. Forget about the talks of moving to D3, the basketball program could fall the way of the football team... All sarcasm aside, I do think its fair to say the idea sounded good. Turned out to be not so good, but the administration put themselves against a wall giving him that extension. Also note, that in the link posted earlier, that his salary is due to increase as the years go by. Imagine that! Get paid more, the worse your squad does! There was no incentive for him to perform.
