3 years ago, the program was on the up and up. Where is it today? Another " rebuilding" year for next year to look forward to. The local media doesn't even give their scores, they have become as irrelevant as Sacred Heart basketball. That's a disgrace. Furthermore, this coach's(I use that term loosely) salary is way too much for these results...
This is fair. Thinking of the other coaches considered at the time as well, I'm not sure any of them could fill Ed's shoes either. Maybe that's why I'm not angry over the situation. The combination of Ed Cooley and Derek Needham was pretty special for the program and even that didn't get us into the tourney. It's not realistic to think that we can maintain being a top team every year in this conference. Siena is still crawling out of the hole Fran McCaffery left, Manhattan is just getting back its position from when Bobby Gonzalez left, and Iona as the most consistent program in the MAAC had a major fall from grace less than a decade ago. I think Sydney held off the inevitable for a year with what Ed left us, but now the typical decline is upon us.
TMAAC, if you had your way and Sydney was out after the year, who would you want brought in? In your opinion, who is the right man for the job? Keep in mind that if we fire Sydney we are still paying that ridiculous contract through 2019.
Thanks JoeStag for the background information on the Han situation.
So, when you wrote that this current situation with Davis and Grennan reminds you of the Han situation --- am I correct in inferring that Davis and Grennan have been badmouthing the other players on the team as Han did to Jamaal Turner, among others?
The reason that the Grennan/Davis situation reminds me of Han, is because Han was removed from the team, and he had to make a decision of agreeing that he was doing something wrong, and should apoligize to the team. I believe this to be the case with Grennan and Davis. Remember these are kids, and they have to be made responsible for their actions or inactions...... just like Cooley wanted Han to do. If Grennan and Davis do not acknowledge responsibility, then they will not return to the team..... the same as Han.
The difference with our scenario when compared to those other programs is that we went ALL in with is guy and he hasn't produced. Both on a basketball level and on a community/school spirit level. That's a major issue. I don't know who I would want. I don't proclaim to have all the answers. However, I am certain that Sydney is not the right man to be the Stags coach. I have no doubt...
" Han Situation " can be purchased for $3.95 from amazon.co. joe stag has left out one chapter, the key to the entire story. after reading the book several times, and speaking with people who were there, both inside and outside the locker room - - we highly recommend the book. soon to be a motion picture, but they can not find anyone to play the roll of Mr Han. while all this goes on Mr Han is leading a full life, splitting his time between brooklyn, puerto rico, miami, and south america. playing pro ball, making a good living, and keeping the ladies happy. amazon still has a few copies left.

If SJ was fired, then FU could negotiate a lesser buyout or potentially shelve SJ until 2019. If that happened, SJ would be irrelevant - not something he'd want.
People have mentioned Bob Simon - I'd be all for that. Bob got us Needham.
Han did not stay and earn his degree and Turner was off the team in another year.
The unfortunate thing was that Han was never disciplined with loss of PT or suspended for a game during his career. Instead he was lauded as a Captain and great Leader of the team. Kind of like giving positive reinforcement, for negative behavior. Its not a surrpise why Han did not Change. And it was too bad it had to come down to that ending.. I think its perferable to nip issues like this in the bud, like Sydney is doing with these two, and he did with Justin Jenkins. The most importat thing in the long run is for these players to improve.

First rational comments I have heard about the Han situation here. I am with you JoeStag and now understand your perspective on this current situation.

JS, you seem to be far more informed than I am on the Davis/Grennan situation and the Justin Jenkins situation. I'm not sure if your belief is that the most important thing in the long run is for these players to improve as basketball players or to improve as people.
Either way, I think the most important thing in the short run is for the Fairfield men's basketball team to go on a winning streak.
stagophile " turner was the real deal " but he was not a good basketball player. however Han was made captain of the team, 2 years in a row. Han was one of the memorable players in stag history. Han stays in touch with peanut to this day. the " Han Situation " was distorted, twisted, and swept under the rug. today, word has it that he is happy and successful and spending his time between brooklyn, puerto rico, miami and south america. "han is lucky turner did not kick his ass ? " fill us in on how Mr Turner is doing lately.
..."I think its perferable to nip issues like this in the bud, like Sydney is doing with these two, and he did with Justin Jenkins. The most importat thing in the long run is for these players to improve".
Unfortunately a reason for the "issues like this" seem to be all speculation, conjecture and conflicting explanations at this time in addition to all the unsubstantiated comments that have been posted because as Chris Elsberry wrote in his CT POST piece - "They're not with the team. They need time to get their focus and commitment right," Johnson said. "It's nothing more or less than that. It's certainly not a rash (decision). I don't want to detail all the stuff. It's internal but I'll say that they're not with us.
Even though "it's internal" at this point, I do think that more is yet to come about this or should be made known about this because two guards, a Big East red shirted transfer and a highly touted freshman that spent an additional year at a prep school, who were recruited by SJ to contribute are now not on a (5-19)(2-11) team that needs all the help it can get in the next 7 regular season games and the PIG in Springfield, especially from the guard position in a guard league.
Really Bridgeport? That's your response? Where is Turner in life? He is not playing professional basketball in PR so he is somehow less a man. I judge a man on how he conducts himself and treats others, not on how they shot a basketball. Read JoeStags comments on Han and then watch the video interview of Jamal Turner. There is a young man who respects his peers, coaches and family. That is the mark of a good man that I can respect!

I have to agree with this point it is a good one. But I am not all that confident that is really what is going on. From the outside this situation looks to be something entirely different. If Sydney is using good judgement and appropriately handling this matter, I'm totally behind his actions. However if comments like Jwests are true, than this looks more like a coach running kids off the team to free up scholarships, than appropriate discipline, and that is something that should be of concern to many.

If SJ had to "nip issues" in the bud with three of his recruits this year, then SJ is not bringing in the right type of player/person. It all comes back to and reflects on SJ. Barrows comments are actually telling. If he supported the decision, I'm sure that he'd say something along the lines of "we support the way coach is handling."
Once again I'm very confused. I took the link provided to the mirrorsports.blogspot and read the article on Han. But in the column to the right, there were stories concerning last night's Fairfield/Monmouth game. But the left hand column had links that would take the reader to the old scout.com message board that no one is posting on anymore.
So I thought it probably had something to do with the fact that the link was to an article from 2009. But when I hit the Mirrorblog link JS has in his links section; it's the same situation.
Why does one column have current information and another column provide a link to a site that is only of value for historical research? Shouldn't there be a link to this message board instead so current students can see there's a dedicated group of alumni and friends of Fairfield sports who are very passionate about Fairfield's athletic teams?
