From Gary Parrish's cbssports.com article: Manhattan coach Steve Masiello will be introduced as the next head coach at USF later this week, multiple sources told CBSSports.com. The deal is for five years and worth more than $1 million per year...

Bwahhhh, how much does George Beamon and Rhamel Brown get of Masiello's new found riches? I love college sports, but, the hypocrisy never ceases to amaze me.

Beamon & Brown got a scholarship at a fine school. I'm guessing that Manhattan loses money on their athletics program. So does Fairfield. The top/prominent athletes may be exploited somewhat, but the average one gets benefits that outweigh the costs. Beamon & Brown got a lot of exposure, hopefully a degree, and the favor of influential Manhattan grads. They now have options to potentially play (probably overseas) and to take advantage of their "celebrity". What better options do 2-3 star recruits have?

Interesting that USF has basically been a dormant program in trying to make headway in the old BE conference, and this year the AAC. In fact Heath when he was hired there was thought of as a hot young guy that could do the job. Didn't happen. However in this case things may be different. For one, the new conference is much easier to move up in than the previous one. Two, their home arena has recently been upgraded and modernized, and I'm sure the workout facilities were as well. And quite frankly the Tampa area isn't a bad selling point for recruits to spend their winters. So I think Steve will do well there (unless of course he uses this place as a stepping stone to a BIGGER job). Always interested in how former Fairfield and other MAAC coaches do in their new gigs. Now, the next question is, who do the Jaspers hire? Will they stay in house? I admit I don't know much about the current assistants. I'm sure they will probably open up the process for applications, and where the program is right now they should certainly get some good people to inquire. Will they get the right person to keep things going or will things go back downhill (such as what happened when Rohrssen was hired to replace Gonzales a few years ago)? Quite frankly almost all of these mid level type programs are hanging by a thread from coach to coach and year by year with Manhattan being a prime example (not to mention Fairfield and Siena recently). The next couple of weeks should be fun to watch for sure!
Sources have told CBSSports.com that among those who supported Masiello's candidacy is Chris Sullivan, a co-founder of Outback Steakhouse and influential Tampa resident who is close with Pitino. USF finished 12-20 this season, 3-15 in the American Athletic Conference.
Also heard about it on WBCS radio. "This is where I want to be". I guess that Steve Masiello wanted to be in Tampa just a little bit more than he wanted to be in Riverdale. $6.2 million for 5 years and playing in the AAC against his friend and mentor rather than the MAAC might have helped change his mind. I'm guessing that most of the Jasper fans feel the same way many Stag fans felt when Ed Cooley moved up the ladder to PC but that is to be expected at the MAAC level. However, like them or not, MAAC coaches like Masiello, Gonzo, Ruland, Patsos and Cooley are good for the MAAC and add a level of excitement to the games.
'73 -- I think Louisville will be in the ACC next year not the AAC so Masiello doesn't have to face Pitino unless they schedule an OOC game or cross paths in some in season tournament.
In addition to Masiello's salary, USF bought out the remaining years of Heath's contract according to Jeff Goodman at espn.com --- ...Former Bulls coach Stan Heath took the team to the NCAA tournament two years ago and received an extension, but the school bought out the remaining $1.5 million of his deal.
Interesting wrinkle, apparently USF tore up Maisiello contract while doing their due diligence. Some sort of discrepancy. He already said his peace to Manhattan AD and team and already started following USF players on twitter. This could get ugly.
Maybe something to do with that Kentucky Debby ticket scam a few years back
South Florida has rescinded a five-year offer to Manhattan's Steve Masiello to become its next coach after a search firm found a previously undetected discrepancy in his background check, The Tampa Tribune reported, citing a source close to the search.
Masiello, 36, regarded by many as one of the top young coaches in the country, had agreed to the deal, leaving only financial details to be worked out, according to the Tribune.
The newspaper reported the contract was believed to be worth more than $1 million per season.
It wasn't clear whether Masiello was eligible to return to Manhattan in the wake of the deal falling through or what it was specifically that Eastman & Beaudine, a Texas-based search firm, found in the background check.....
"a previously undetected discrepancy in his background check" ? The Texas search firm was paid $60,000 by USF and found this "discrepancy". I wonder in light of this, would Manhattan even want him back coaching in Riverdale? Apparently Manhattan was not aware of this either when Masiello was hired three years ago.
Looking at the quote which is the heading for this thread ---- "This is where I want to be" --- I'm wondering if any reporter for the NY Post is trying for a follow-up interview with Masiello in the wake of USF rescinding their offer. And the reporter is hoping Masiello says either "This (Manhattan College) is where I hope they take me back" or "I hope I'm coaching somewhere next season".
Gary Parrish at cbssports.com asks what I've been wondering: ...The background-check discrepancy was discovered by Eastman & Beaudine. That's a Texas-based search firm that USF paid $60,000 to help find a new coach...Why wasn't thebackground check completed before Masiello received and accepted an offer? That's a question USF officials will need to answer Wednesday. Meantime, the school is back to searching for Heath's replacement, and whether Masiello will be in a position to return to Manhattan under these circumstances remains unclear...
3 years ago, when we were evaluating coaches to replace Cooley. Masiello was looking for head coaching opportunities, but the word on street about Masiello boiled down to 2 things:
- there was some "Shakey things" in his background - If you hired Masiello, it came with the "Pitino Tree".... meaning that the Pitino tree would want to have some say in the program direction (i.e. Recruits, transfers, Assistants). That can be viewed as a Good or Bad thing.
This background check sounds like it uncovered some "Shakey Things"
JoeStag, my questions would be: 1. What exactly are those shaky things that Manhattan thought they could live with but USF finds intolerable? and 2.Will Manhattan take Masiello back since they seem to have known what those shaky things were before they originally hired him?
