To me it is logical to spend money on the rec plex before renovating alumni hall. Todays students applying to college EXPECT a modern recreational facility for their use during the undergrad/graduate years. It is an important marketing tool to attract applicants. Alumni hall is a dump and I would agree could be replaced most efficiently at the same time the new rec plex is being constructed. No doubt. However I think your typical student applying to Ffld sees the rec plex a a place they can use and alumni hall as place used by a small number of privileged varsity players.

AH is also used for intramurals, concerts, and various other univerity activities. Every student uses it.

The Rec Plex as an on campus recreation facility needs to be more of an asset to prospective students and it's renovation and expansion are necessary for the University to stay competitive in that ever demanding market. Peeling paint aside, I also think that prospective students and their parents don't EXPECT to see an antiquated and outmoded building like Alumni Hall in 2014 with window AC units, especially at $57,000 a year to attend Fairfield University. If they later go back into the lobby and look inside, they will see what Athletic Director Gene Doris describes as a "bad high school gym" and Sr. VP Mark Reed describes as a facility that "falls below the standards for a university of Fairfield’s quality, depth, and breadth". It is not part of the campus tour for students and recruits for a reason. Unfortunately AH is no longer an asset to the University but has been allowed to become an embarrassing and neglected relic that need not be.
