While we are not on the "Bleeding Edge" of recruiting International players, we do seem to be on the tail end of the "Leading Edge" of going after International players. I think this trend will start to explode over the next few years. We also did pretty well with Deng Gai, Ajou Deng and Kudjo Sogadzi

The key I think regards whether a particular signing of one or more players from this category leads to success, therefore possibly paving the way for more of the same. A recruiter that establishes relations with various international connections can be invaluable. It appears that Parotta might indeed fall into this category. Hopefully get a pipeline going to get a leg up on the competition in this area. Great example of a program that has had a great run in the last decade because of international acquisitions is Saint Mary's of California. Mostly Australians in their case, mainly through an assistant on Coach Randy Bennett's staff who is well known and respected among scholastic circles down under.

I'd think the model here is Gonzaga. Turiaf, Olynyk, Sacre, and now Sabonis all studs with international backgrounds. Duke and Kentucky don't go after these guys because they don't need to.
I don't understand. Why are these guys coming for a visit then? Did they come to basically try out or audition for an offer?
Yes, when a player has an offer to come for a visit, then each party evaluates each other to make sure there is a good fit Athletically, Academically and Socially. An offer might not be made immediately or not at all, or he could have been a secondary choice. The coaching staff has repeatedly said that they are going to be "Very Patient". What I had heard about Montgomery was that he was a very good player, tough rebounder and inside player. But he needed to improve his shot, and was more like 6-5.
I don't know exactly where Montgomery fit in the pecking order, but it seems to me that players like Saddler and Sears are at a Higher level. I don't understand where the Bains recruitment stands, but I do know that they were evaluating him as a PF.

The whole thing is a "process" of evaluation between the prospect, the coaches, and by extension the interaction back and forth with other aspects of the school, not the least of which of course should be academic offerings. So yes, I guess you could indeed characterize a visit as an audition. Also EXTREMELY important is the chemistry that is formed between the recruit and the players as they interact for the 48 hours or so allowed for the visit. I guess you could say this "vetting" is similar to what the NFL teams went through recently before choosing their draft picks last week.

Bwahhhh!!! We lost out on a recruit to St. Francis. That's just pathetic. Bains and now this. I am getting depressed.
Stago, don't get too depressed, please! We are considering many (maybe some you have not even read about) and BTW these kids have multiple options besides Fairfield, therefore obviously there will be quite a few that go somewhere else. Actually when you look at this particular case, I imagine quite a few on this board might have the same reaction you do here if we DIDN'T lose this guy. Probably be a lot of criticism for beating out a school such as St. Francis for a needed player as he would maybe be perceived as not worthy. BTW I am NOT at all stating this kid isn't a great player. Don't know anything about him really. But I'm just saying be patient, that's all. Before long I believe we will have some positive news on a recruit who the program truly wants and by extension truly wants to play basketball for the Stags.
I would not say that St. Francis got a recruit over Fairfield. I know Rider brought Montgomery in for an official visit in the fall. Schools are allowed to work out recruits and they can play pick-up with the present players. After the workout, I know the Rider coaches were not sold on Montgomery and were not ready to sign him. When Rider got commitments from other guys who they rated higher they stopped recruiting him. My guess is St. Francis was the highest level solid offer he had.
Web sites like Verbal Commits are a great source and they try to be accurate but they are very misleading. For instance, last week they posted that Rider made offers to a high school seniors since the kid put a tweet out about how an assistant coach gave him an offer. If the head coach never seen the kid play, in my opinion that this is not a real offer.

Rider, I agree 100% that the Verbal Commits site is great and misleading at the same time. Recruiting is dynamic, and those dynamics change daily. Verbal commits is good when tracking initial offers, but when a school or player is no longer interested, that information is not updated and becomes stale.
The Montgomery recruiting is exactly the same as what Isaac Vann went thru 2 years ago. Thats why Vann went to Maine and Montgomery went to St Francis (NY).
I do not know all the recruits that are visiting, but I do know that Damien Sears and Zac Saddler are 2 of them. Saddler has visited, Sears will visit. I would take both, but I don't know who else we are involved with.
