$800,000 possibly for the next coach at Quinnipiac and resetting the bar for a MAAC Coach's Salary. Almost double what Quinnipiac is paying now. Maybe it's worth it to the die-hard college basketball fan but probably not to the rest of the Quinnipiac Athletic Department and definely not worth it to the Quinnipiac Academic Departments.

Do you think basketball at Uconn is a cash drain on the school or a revenue generator.
Done right, a sports program can we a significant cash generator.
Fairfield made a lot of mistakes in the early 80's and unfortunately the prospect of basketball being a cash generator has probably forever passed the school by. If that is the case patriot league or d3 makes sense. But there are still some that hope the situation can change, hence we are throwing a lot of money at Sydney johnson.
Ok. I'll ask it. What's better? Fairfield and Marist leave the MAAC for the Patriot League. The Patriot League might not think Marist meets the academic criteria, but they get their much needed 8th football program. 12 teams, 2 divisions. Home and home with division teams. 2 home and homes with non division teams. 2 Home games only and two road games only with the other non division teams. 18 league games. 9 home 9 road. Fairfield's would be in a division with BU, Holy Cross, Army, Marist, and Colgate. The other division is Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, Loyola, Navy, and American. Would the home schedule be more attractive with BU, Holy Cross, Army, Marist, Colgate, plus 4 out of conference; Loyola, Bucknell, Navy, Lehigh. Thoughts?

Perfect. How do we sell this the PL? This would be a very neat conference with some very nice schools and really keep travel to a minimum.
Great, because I hate long bus rides. Seriously!!?!?
I want someone to run this program that can get +recruits and gets us to a level where we are a threat to mediocre majors. I don't think the PL is going to help to that end.

Great, because we haven't thrown millions of enough dollars at being a threat to the top tier of the MAAC over the past 30 years. Seriously?!?!?

What is the goal? The goal is making the NCAA Tournament. Where do we have a better chance of making the NCAA Tournament? In a league competing against schools willing to overpay coaches and accept high risk players like Jordan Washington (Iona), Je'lon Hornbeak (Monmouth) or Nico Clareth (Siena)? Or in a league competing against schools that are not willing to cut corners and value their academic integrity like Fairfield. What does it matter if you are the one bid mid-major league representative of the MAAC, Patriot League, AE, NEC or CAA? You achieved the same goal, same revenue and same exposure for your school.
At least in the Patriot League, we are being honest about who we are as a school
Stago, this sounds like you want to give up and go Backwards. We must always strive to be better…… in Basketball and Academics. I agree that we need to get out of the MAAC, But going backwards is not the way to go. The examples of Fordham, Holy Cross and Loyola are perfect examples.
If there comes a day, that we say we cannot compete, then Patriot would be a fine league. But I do feel that we are still an option for the CAA and that would improve us Athletically and expand our Academic excellence geographically.
JS, WHY must we strive to be a better basketball program? We can be an OUTSTANDING academic school without D1 basketball or D1 anything! Yes, strive to be the best in academics, that is a noble goal.
Its a game. The average student does not attend FU because its athletic conference. Kids want great academic programs, great facilities, and most importantly, kick off their life upon graduation with a job in the discipline of their choice or move into a post graduate degree that will achieve their goals. D1 Basketball is meaningless to that end.
FU has wasted incredible resources over the years with no ROI. You are not going backwards. You are following a vision of being the best academic university you can. Athletics are merely a means to help student athletes round out the experience. D1, D2, D3 whatever, will provide intercollegiate competition to provide that experience.

In the 33 years of MAAC Basketball, that began in 1984, Fairfield has been to the NCAA Tournament only three times with the last being 20 years ago in 1997. Claiming that the program has won so many games statistically over so many years doesn't really matter to most Stag fans, our fellow alumni, students and the media and it is reflected in dwindling attendance. Other than to the long suffering die-hard Stag fans, nothing else really matters unless the Stags are in the NCAA Tournament and not once every 20 years. Clearly the Men's Basketball program is not getting it done no matter how you spin it. It has been a leadership problem at the coaching level, Athletic Department level and ultimately at the Administration level. Maybe with the change in leadership things will improve?
I brought this up to compare the "product". Is the home conference schedule more attractive? I know the market reach is better by adding Boston, Baltimore, and DC.

None of us are here to cheer for the Fairfield academic team!
Yeah. I want Fairfield to continue to be a good school, but I'm here because I want to see kids in Fairfield uniforms dunk in the faces of the rest of the MAAC (preferably in a modern and rowdy arena).

Exactly the point. It's not about us. It's about building and maintaining a first class academic institution.
Paulie74 - Athletics are a part of a liberal arts education... Also part of a Jesuit education - Sound mind, body, and spirit. Lose competitive athletics and you lose tons of competitive students. Lose competitive athletics and lose Alumni and community support, which actually make Fairfield more competitive. I know this Quinnie hire is insane. I actually think the publicity around it might hurt the school. Who knows... But, competitive athletics are a big part of Fairfield and are here to stay.
Also, just because Men's Baselketball ever can't get its act together, it doesn't mean that our other successful D1 programs deserve to be demoted to D3. We have a lot of non-basketball MAAC Championship teams over the last 20 years.

If you read what I said, I do not disagree. I did NOT say we don't need athletics. But D1 athletics and the cost and the baggage that goes with it is not mandatory.
Lots of Jesuit schools are not D1.
D2 and D3 rivalries, games and conferences are very competitive.
You know what is amazing is that when I tell people I follow FU basketball they say, "They're D1? I didn't realize that"
You can have a sound body and competitive sports at any level.
I say lets make our mark and get publicity from our highly ranked health sciences, business programs and other academic programs not our annual mediocre RPI.
