Catching up on my newspaper reading from yesterday, there was an article in the Post that included thoughts from all the colleges and universities in Fairfield and New Haven counties regarding the virus and how it would affect their athletic programs going forward. And FWIW there was a statement (kind of combined) from both Fairfield and Sacred Heart "officials" that said both of their projects (hockey arena for the Pioneers) will indeed be built and plan to be finished "on time" (whatever that means). So to me anyway, that's good news.

That is great news! It also still shows that both Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University don't want their home court/hockey rink facilities off campus in downtown Bridgeport at the WBA. Fairfield will be spending $45+ million and Sacred Heart $60 million on their new on campus facilities.

Anything on a start date yet.....been a month since I checked.Just trying to keep my mind active with the negatives going around. I need something to look forward to.
The university should seriously wait no longer and K/O construction of the new Convocation Center. I would guess there are money issues that are not known to the public.Either a major contributor has backed out or the FF administration is being overly conservative when being faced with the new incremental operating costs resulting from the virus. However , from a construction standpoint now is an excellent time to begin. The manpower situation is very good at this time , the trades are slow and there is a good supply of trades people available for the project. Workers can be protected from contacting the virus by following newly created work rules . Materials are also readily available because demand has been reduced as a result of projects on hold due to the virus. Finally, money is cheap with interest rates during the last four years reaching historic lows. IMO time to step out and begin.
Finally something "official" by the University about the Convocation Center but with no games at the WBA in the latest Stag Women's Basketball release:
As determined by the MAAC Basketball Working Group, there will be no spectators in attendance at any game hosted by a MAAC member prior to Dec. 23. At that time, both the MAAC and Fairfield University will reassess this policy in conjunction with local, state, federal and institutional guidelines.
All men's and women's basketball home games this season will be played on campus on George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall. Construction of the new on-campus Convocation Center is anticipated to commence in early 2021. Fundraising for the Convocation Center continues to be strong. The university anticipates that this project will be completely funded through philanthropy. Each financial benchmark has been hit and the support from many different Stags has made this highly-anticipated project a reality.
"We have seen the genuine excitement in our community surrounding our new Convocation Center, and all of us in Stags Athletics certainly share that feeling of great anticipation," said Director of Athletics Paul Schlickmann. "We made a prudent decision to delay the construction process due to the multi-layered impact of Covid-19 on our campus, the region and the state. The adjusted timeline for the project was a measured response to best serve the short and long-term interests of the University, our programs and our student-athletes. We are looking forward to hosting another season of Fairfield Stags Basketball on-campus at Alumni Hall as well as to the excitement, camaraderie and celebrations to come in our new Convocation Center."
Every Fairfield home game, as well as every conference road game, will be streamed on ESPN3 or ESPN+(PPV).

No WBA means no fans this season. No way they’re going to put a thousand or more in AH. Maybe 2021/2022 Is the outdoor court still there near the softball field?

Heard they will put up a roof like Arthur Ashe in Flushing and call it the "Deer Dome"
I think you've got it Disco. And IMO by next season, the convocation center construction will be well under way, Helen will be sending out her regular season ticket packages and there will be enough confidence as rapid testing, more effective therapeutics, reliable contact tracing and vaccinations will be well underway.
The problem is no vaccine will be 100% effective, but if infection rates are minimal and some basic precautions are taken fans will feel comfortable about returning to the stands.
Reliable "instant" testing would be a real breakthrough. If they could ever get to a reliable test as easy as scanning for a fever, it would be no more intrusive than security screenings at stadiums today. Don't count out science, they probably could figure that out if it delivered an ROI. I want in on the ground floor of that IPO

Major league baseball has gone 29 days without a positive test. I think it has been demonstrated that you can play sports with minimal risk to players. I expect case loads to increase as the colder weather approaches, but even so, life and sports can continue with the proper precautions in place.
