It will take some time for Gilbane the GC and the project manager to mobilize and get ready to start on the CC. I assume the GC has completed the final review of the plans , called a page turn, with the town building dept. and has already secured a building permit. After that some time will be spent setting up safety fences around the site and most likely reducing the street in front of AH from four lanes down to two as they did with the Rec plex upgrade. A “ lay down “ area for equipment , supplies and construction trailers will be created on the side and rear of present AH. Once all the preliminaries are completed then the real work of Demo classic AH will begin. I saw a timeline posted that said 18-24 month construction period.
Well if it takes 18 months, maybe we only miss one year not playing on campus. 24, two more years I'm afraid.
After all the years and years and years of waiting, it would be nice if the University set up a Convocation Center Construction Webcam to let the people see what is going on like they did when the BCC was added onto. If BC, Holy Cross, PC and many, many other schools have campus webcams set up then why not Fairfield University? A beautiful campus like ours would be nice to see seasonally and in all weather. I had suggested campus webcams to Fr. von Arx years ago but nothing came of it. At least he loved the Stag Statue idea. Maybe this time? A great recruiting tool, a great way to keep our fellow alumni and visitors connected to the University. Why not, we have a beautiful campus so let’s show it.
You would hope when the bulldozers arrive, they will have a ceremonial virtual groundbreaking/demolition party.
Well I don't know if the bulldozers have arrived yet or the groundbreaking has started, but in a related development there is a big article in the paper today regarding that very thing happening over at Sacred Heart with their new hockey arena. And it is interesting that they are already anticipating their first game in that place. It is currently scheduled for Jan. 14, 2023. Point is if we want to be able to get into our new building for a few games during the 2022-23 season, the work has to start NOW.

And now a side-note to the final (final-final) contest ever played at Alumni Hall which actually turns out to be quite a human interest story. The last basket and points EVER scored in that building was a 3-point shot that was executed by a former Prep team manager named B.J. Wentzel who made the roster as a senior for this current season. And to make the story more heart-warming is the fact that the young man is currently battling Crohn's disease. So obviously we all wish him well in his fight while at the same time acknowledging that he will always be the answer to a trivia question that can never be taken away.

Sacred Heart University broke ground Monday on its $70 million ice arena on the university’s west campus in Fairfield.
The facility will be home to its Division I men’s and women’s hockey programs, figure skating team and men’s club team along with a new women’s program beginning in the fall. It is the continuation of a multiyear expansion program to support student growth, engagement and personal development, according to SHU President John J. Petillo.....
And yet Fairfield University still has yet to break ground on the new Convocation Center. Maybe President Nemec should be asking SHU President Petillo how Sacred Heart University can do it already on a building that costs $25 million more?
Nemec was waiting for the SHU hockey arena ground breaking ceremony in order to save money. He plans on getting a really good price on the ceremonial ground breaking shovels buying them second hand from SHU!
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball finished off the home portion of the 2021 spring schedule with a pair of 3-0 wins over visiting Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. The Stags hosted the Saints at Rafferty Gymnasium inside the Walsh Athletic Center due to the beginning stages of construction on the University's new Convocation Center.

That was a pretty sad live-stream of the demolition at 10:00 a.m. the other day. That clearly did not look like the most efficient method to bring down the old structure. It was actually quite bizarre to watch. I hope the rest of the project goes much better. I would assume the demolition company is only handling that one part of the job.
Go, do u have any construction experience? If u did you might understand the demolition of a structure in close proximity to other buildings ( rec plex), parking lots, pedestrian traffic must be completed slowly and methodically for safety and liability reasons. I agree the broadcast could have been done better. However, I do appreciate seeing the beginnings of the project and would appreciate if a web cam was set up so periodically those remote to the campus could check in on progress occasionally.
As boring as watching the "dinosaur" nibble away at AH was, they could have really done a sports like production with an exciting MC and really made it a virtual event that would have been at least somewhat entertaining to those interested. "Ohhh... and there goes the back wall." - You may be chucking at the stupidity, but all those asinine highly rated reality shows are not surviving (no pun intended) because no one is watching them.
And it lives on social media forever.
Someone said to me yesterday (a Fordham grad BTW) how is SHU thriving and doing so much? It is a second tier school (and I am tempering his description). I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach everyday when I walk by the Community Theater in town. SHU dominates the downtown landscape.
Perception is reality. FU seems to never to learn this marketing 101 lesson. Sell the sizzle not the steak.
It is just so frustrating that no one over there gets it.

The funny thing is, you can major in Marketing at Fairfield. Communication, too.
