In just their second game ever as a D-1 program, Merrimack upsets Northwestern by 10 points in Evanston!
Another surprising result involving two teams we don't face this season is Dartmouth beating Buffalo at Buffalo 68-63 last night. Buffalo was in the NCAAs the past two seasons while Dartmouth has been in the lower tier of the Ivy League for several seasons.
On top of that, Hofstra beat Monmouth by 20 and Canisius lost to Brown. Tough day for the MAAC.
As an aside, former Stag Deniz Celen (St Francis, NY) had 16 pts, 5 rebs and 3 steals in a 1-point win over Lafayette. I will be the first to admit, I didn't think this kid could play D-1. Glad to see he is proving me wrong.
Former Stag (and UMass Minuteman) Curtis Cobb (Wagner) had 19 pts in a blowout loss to Penn State.

Yeah a tough day for the MAAC for sure as I was under the (obviously nonsensical) belief that the league might win all three of these games. As far as Iona is concerned, is it a consolation that they lost? Actually as much as I hate yet envy their program relating to how they dominate the league, fact is I was looking to them for 'leadership' in helping the league get a little respect this season, and for that reason I was very disappointed in their effort against a team that should struggle to stay above water in the A-10. In fact if you could project them to win the MAAC Tournament again at the end of the year (a very likely result based on past history), this defeat last evening probably doomed them to a 15th seed at best and more likely a 16th seed in the Big Dance, a situation cemented by the fact that (believe it or not) they appear to be locked into an OOC schedule that now leaves them with only 6 games left before they take on the league. Only defeating UConn or Colorado would give them any boost in the NET ratings I think. And BTW I watched that game, a contest that was interesting because Tim Cluess was home sick with illness, they were behind all game until a miracle rally in the last minute to tie, yet after that they got SHUTOUT in OT. Strange, especially since the announcers suggested that Tim might have been "throwing up" at home while watching the telecast!
As far as Celen, good for him for resurrecting his career after he left Fairfield. "Once a Stag, always a Stag" is my motto. Same for Cobb too, although certainly I hope we can defeat he and Wagner when we play them in late December.

I always thought Celen would develop. He had decent range as a shouter and moves close to the basket. He could rebound. He was woefully out of shape and also needed to work on his strength. So to achieve his potential he was going to need to work hard. But I felt he was better perhaps than one of the players we brought in to replace him. I also agree once a Stag always a Stag I do wish him the best. Ditto for Mr. Cobb, I suspect he is going to have a good year at Wagner.
4 MAAC Games today. Manhattan is a big favorite by 19 points. The other 3 games are 1-2 point games. MAAC needs to win 2-3 games tonight to start climbing the rankings.
