Former Stag Ferron Flavors scores 24 in an OT win over Central Arkansas. And how about this score? D1 newbie Merrimack 110 Lesley 16. R U kidding me?
Yeah we always knew Ferron could score, especially with that outside stroke. Looks like he is settling in for a great career at a new D-1 program that has moved up with the help of a foundation as being kind of a dominant one just before the move. So it looks like he should be happy with where he has ended up, at least from a basketball perspective.
As far as the Merrimack-Leslie score, I had the same reaction. Thought it might have been a misprint initially, but sadly it wasn't. This now makes two times that Merrimack has sort of made national news, one for a very good reason (upsetting Northwestern in Evanston) and now this, with when you think about it is very embarrassing for both schools actually. I do think that Leslie, who to the best of my knowledge is a pretty new D-111 program based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, probably knew they were in over their head, therefore the acceptance of this matchup was not well thought out. Now obviously not having watched the contest and seen how it was processed from a Merrimack standpoint (speed of game, substitutions, etc.), and I know there are many who say that you should never let your foot off the gas (nor how you do it for that matter), but I do think this margin is a bit ridiculous and I'm sure some of the folks up at Andover might feel the same way. The lesson to be learned I think is that greater care should be taken, particularly by the lower division program, in who they decide to put on their schedule.
MAAC goes 3-0 last night as QU wins a home game against Albany and the MAAC sweeps the first night of the MAAC/Sun Challenge with Monmouth and Iona winning. It's Iona's first win of the season.
A win is a win (I guess) but Stetson and Kennesaw are the worst teams in that conference (Sagarin has each rated in the bottom 10-15 of the country). Not very impressive to see our perennial champ Iona squeak by Stetson, a team with two wins (one against Trinity Baptist and the other by two points against #336 Western Illinois .
Ditto for Monmouth. Sure a 31 point win looks great but Kennesaw's only win was against Reinhardt .
Sure I understand, these were weak opponents and not ones to celebrate over defeating. However as with most schools and programs there are always going to be a few non-conference games where they might be favored by a lot, and conversely heavy underdogs in other matchups. And in the case of the MAAC schools, because of league policy many of their teams never really get the 'gimme' type wins that some of the other league schools (Patriot, Ivy, etc.) get in the form of D-11 and D-111 type programs, therefore I would not be ready to just throwaway these victories as insignificant. In the end, quite frankly based on the fact that the MAAC as well as similar leagues are one bid leagues to the NCAA Tournament, it really doesn't matter who you play and defeat or lose to in that regard anyway. If a win or two at certain times can build your confidence, so much the better for your squad I think. And right about now considering where the Stags are in relation to their schedule, I have to admit I am a little envious of who Iona and Monmouth are playing in Florida considering who we will be playing there this coming week.
And BTW, speaking of Quinnipiac, in seeing them in person last night they look better than they were last year and therefore I think their rating as one of the best in the league is more than justified. Albany is not a bad team at all (rated mid to upper AE), therefore the margin of victory was surprising actually. Now if consistency holds true in the next couple of nights, the Bobcats should defeat Presbyterian (who looked very weak), and then have a great matchup against Sacred Heart on Sunday (who looked strong). The Hearts have the manpower to make a run at the NEC championship this season, therefore a victory for either team in this game would be significant I think.

We also might meet up with Temple in our 3rd game matchup in the Orlando Invitational. Most people would say we will play Harvard in the 3rd round, but Temple could our opponent too. Temple is ranked 96th. That would be a nice matchup on a neutral court.
Temple is my 2nd Favorite team so Go Temple Tough.
And they lose. Same with the other MAAC teams. Siena in triple OT to Yale when everything went wrong considering the Yale player Azur Swain hit a 3-pointer to tie in regulation, but also at two different times Pickett missed a FT that probably would have won the game. And St. Peter's in OT to Wagner as Curtis Cobb scores 25 points to complete (as Dick Vitale might say) the trifecta of misery for the league!
cobb is having a nice season so far. forgot that we play them in dec
Cobb didn't play today in a one-point loss to Stony Brook.

Winning weekend for the MAAC so far, at least in terms of quantity. Still need higher quality wins. Rider has a chance for one tonight against Vermont.
Quinnipiac is down 43-34 at half to Sacred Heart. Quinnipiac does not look good on either side of the ball in the first half. They were actually playing a zone on D which I thought was interesting.

Well in the games I have watched, the Bobcats have been primarily a zone team this year. Maybe they should have adjusted today however considering SHU hit almost 50% of their 3-point shots. Probably the biggest reason why they won by almost 20 points. If they were to play again tomorrow I think it might be an even contest however. Biggest difference today was that Rich Kelly had a bad game as opposed to the first two in this event in which he was terrific. He is that important to his team.

Rider 72 Vermont 67 (best MAAC OOC win so far) Sacred Heart 97 Quinnipiac 80 (Pioneers shoot 60% from the field)
St. John's 78 UMass 63 (Minutemen coming back to earth)
Merrimack 62 Hartford 58 (Hawks outscore Lesley, but Warriors get win No. 5 in D1 debut season) Columbia 82 CCSU 52 (0-7 Blue Devils sinking faster than the Maldives)

I watched the last 30 of the 40 minutes of this game. And Yes, Quinnipiac did not look. The 97-80 final score does not tell the the entire story. At one point SHU, was up 71-49 and was playing like it.
If I am reading the Orlando Invitational brackets correctly it appears the maximum games FF can loose at Disney World is two games not three loses as I thought was possible. Does that seem correct? Of course this assumes the prediction that the Stags are the weakest team in the tournament becomes reality.

Rich Kelly has a history of throwing in some clunker games. Usually 2/3rds of his games look like he is a 1st Team all MAAC.

I agree if SHU played QU today it would be an even game. But the main reason SHU won was because PG Cameron Parker had 16points and 16 Assists. He played an awesome game. In addition to Parker, 2G Ozier (13pts) and frosh shooting guard Tyler Thomas(17pts) looked really good scoring . Goes to show what a team can do with "Real" Multi-talented guards.
Also the 6-10 Spellman, have 2-3 blocks and a whole lot of Intimidations
Good guards and intimidating defense is a key to winning at our level
