After 9 games - Flavors is averaging 14 ppg and 45% from 3pt.
After 8 games - Jerry Johnson is averaging 9 ppg and 48% from 3pt. But, after getting off to a rocky first 4 games, he has really stepped it up in his last 4: 15.8 ppg and 65% from 3pt - including a real nice game in an upset of Tulsa.
I like the sentiment, but our next game will be against Wagner and Curtis Cobb. Cobb is back in Wagner's starting lineup after having been injured for a while. He scored 18 in a twenty-point win over Army today.

Curtis can shoot a team to a win at times and other times he can be the negative that kills his team's chances. I certainly hope the Stags understand this and adjust accordingly!
Deniz Celen, 27 points, 11 rebounds in St. Francis' win over Delaware State.
Always thought Deniz was a talent and underutilized. He was very broad and got good position underneath the basket for rebounding and had a natural touch around the rim. Wonder what Jay could have brought out in him.

Tough, physical player and agree, would like to have seen how JY could have developed Deniz.
Only downside was quickness which you cannot teach, but you can teach how to maximize the use that big body. Wish him continued success at SF.

If does not surprise me that Syd missed the potential in Celen. After all it took nine years and a change in the administration(Nemec/Schlickmann) to see there was no potential in Syd as the stags coach.
Just one of a few players Sydney chased off because he could not see the potential others saw.
I know this has been a recurring theme and one that has essentially been debunked - a better statement is probably "one of a few players that were chased off because Sydney saw potential that nobody else saw... and didn't really see even after they left."
But - Celen probably IS the best argument for a missed opportunity because he is excelling during a time in which he would've actually been at Fairfield. While hindsight can be 20/20... I don't recall too many posts bemoaning Celen's departure - especially when he had clearly been recruited over with Omar/Wassef... and especially especially after Wassef's first game.
All credit to Celen. Not every big DOES develop - but he looks leaner stronger quicker and is having a great year.

I thought Celen had a lot of potential and said so at the time. I considered him a loss. But I wasn't overly critical at the time and I am less so now. I wasn't at the practices. Maybe the kid didn't demonstrate the work ethic. Maybe he lacked commitment. He certainly wasn't in top playing shape. We don't know all that transpired that might have led to his departure. Perhaps changing schools was what propelled him to put forth effort and to improve on his game. Maybe his current school does a better job of developing big men. We will never really know what would have happened if he stayed.
I certainly felt he had the raw skills to be a top level maac player. He had touch around the basket and took up space in the lane. These skills cannot be taught. So its not at all surprising to see him doing well, but we will never know for sure how well he would have done had he stayed at Fairfield.
Funny coincidence, bumped into former stag Mike Kirkland jr at the airport in Orlando last night.
He was wearing a Fairfield Basketball #0 backpack and was traveling with family for the Holidays.
He was with his brother Simeon Kirkland who is sophomore at juco Florida SouthWestern and ranked #68 in the juco rankings. Short conversation and didn't ask if he was looking to also be a Stag.
