After setting the single season program record in victories a season ago, the Fairfield University Baseball team was predicted for another successful season as they were chosen second in the 2020 MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll as voted upon the league's 11 head coaches. The Stags received three first place votes and finished just four points behind preseason favorite and reigning MAAC Champions Quinnipiac. Senior outfielder Dan Ryan and sophomore infielder Justin Guerrera comprised Fairfield's Preseason All-MAAC selections.
"It's always nice to get the respect from the other coaches in the league regarding where they think you're going to place," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "Of course it matters where you finish at the end and making it happen."
The Stags won a program record 35 games last season and finished as the MAAC runners-up, advancing to the 2019 MAAC Baseball Championship series before falling to Quinnipiac (4-6 and 5-6 in 13 innings).
"Dan Ryan was an outstanding center fielder last year," Coach Currier said. "He was very hot in the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team. He showed a lot of the coaches that he's a pretty good all-around player and he will be returning for his senior year this year."
"Justin certainly was a solid choice for preseason All-MAAC," Currier said. "For a freshman last year he had 41 RBI and stayed in the two hole and had some real good power numbers. He's certainly one of our better players coming back at the plate and on defense."
The Stags will begin their 2020 campaign when they travel to UNC Greensboro for a three-game set starting on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2:00 pm.
