Stags 14-11Stags (2-0) with 5 goals in the final period and 5 in the first period. Stags had been down 7-9 and outscore Merrimack 7-2 for the win. Dylan Beckwith with 4 goals and 2 assists Travis Ford with 4 goals "Winning is hard to come by," said Head Coach Andrew Baxter. "You've got to be ready to play every opponent. We still have things to work on in every part of the game, but I'm proud of the way we gutted it out and came away with the win today."Merrimack was powered by the 2018 and 2019 USILA Division II National Player of the Year, Charlie Bertrand. Bertrand finished the day with three goals and three assists, but was limited by the Stags defense to just one assist in the second half and racking up five points over the contest's opening 30 minutes. "We weren't executing the game plan in the first half; we slipped on a couple details and he was able to get free and score," said Baxter of his team's performance against the Warriors' high-scoring attackman. "We did a much better job of containing him in the second half. Lucas (Pedersen) really battled with him all game and did a great job."
"We still need to keep getting better every day," noted Baxter. "We have a couple big days of practice coming before Georgetown then a full week of practice next week that are going to be huge for us as far as continuing to get better."Box Scorefairfieldstags.com/sports/mens-lacrosse/stats/2020/merrimack/boxscore/10066Up NextFairfield hits the road for the first time this Saturday with a Noon trip to Georgetown. The Hoyas (2-0) were ranked #15 in both major national polls this past week.

Gutsy, grind-it-out win! We have several talented offensive players that are shining right now. And a goalie that is making those crucial saves that help change the momentum and outcome of games! Hope they keep it up!

To put this in perspective a bit, we haven’t started out 2-0 since 2014. 6 yrs ago!
I really like how we have multiple guys participating in scoring. Obviously there are some stand outs, but it seems like we are really playing a “team” offensive to start and Beckwith, Strough, Ford, & Drake are benefitting (ie. They are getting more opportunities to score). That marginal difference in lacrosse is a big deal and often times is the difference between a win or lose.
I also like the grit and hustle. These guys are playing to win. It is very fun to watch. I hope they keep growing and keep it up. It could be a very fun year and finish for the seniors (after some tough years) if they do.

The first “real test” comes this Saturday on the road against Georgetown. That will be a good indicator of the Stags potential to have a successful season and how competitive they might be in the CAA. I would not be surprised if they get “ spanked” by GU.

Agree on the “real test”, but parity is growing in lacrosse. I would be surprised by a spanking from what I am seeing early, unless we have a complete collapse. Lafayette was a terrible program last year and UMBC was mediocre. Those are G-towns 2 wins to start the season. I am not overly impressed.
