Fairfield University (11-15, 7-8 MAAC) VS Siena (14-7, 10-5 MAAC)
Sunday, February 23, 2020 • 2:00 PM EST
FAIRFIELD, CT
LAST TIME OUT
Fairfield came back from a 17 point deficit to win a thriller over Niagara at Alumni hall by a score of 61-60. Niagara led 60-56 with a minute to go but Landon Taliaferro made a 3-pointer with 48 seconds remaining to bring the Stags within 1 point. Taj Benning scored with 11.1 seconds to give Fairfield the lead, before Niagara's Marcus Hammond missed from the right elbow as time ran out. Marcus's shot was a heart stopper as the ball went in and out as the horn sounded. Benning, finished with 14 points, Landon Taliaferro added 12 points and Allan Jeanne-Rose 11 for Fairfield with Vincent Eze grabbing 11 rebounds to go with seven points. James Towns was the only Purple Eagles player in double figures with 16 points. Fairfield held Niagara scoreless for the first 5:37 of the second half, as Fairfield scored the first 10 points while holding Niagara scoreless Fairfield took their first lead since the game's opening minute on a Taliaferro layup with under seven minutes left.
STREAK ENDED
Fairfield scored 61 points versus Niagara, ending their streak of game scoring 60 or less points at 6 games.
REBOUNDING DIFFERENTIAL
Fairfield outrebounded Niagara 41-23 for an +18 point rebounding differential. This is the largest rebounding advantage for Fairfield since the stags outrebounded Canisius by 17 on January 28th. This is only the fourth time in 10 years where Fairfield had a +18 or greater rebounding advantage, with the most notable of these games being a +26 advantage for the Stags over the Jaspers on 2016-02-07.
DON’T BET AGAINST THESE STAGS
Fairfield failed to cover the spread versus Niagara falling to 15-11 against the spread this season.
SIENA INDIAN - GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
In 1988 Siena became one of the first schools in the nation to get away from using a Native American nickname dropping the name “Indians” and actually going without a moniker for an entire season. During the 1988 season they were often referred to as the Siena “no-names” and during that memorable season the “Tee Pee Rowdies cheering section became know affectionately as the “Pee Pee Rowdies” section while “Red Injun Tomahawk Man” their long beloved and appropriately named mascot was replaced with a leprechaun dressed in the school colors. The new Mascot didn’t last long however, as their was a huge backlash against the school administration as leprechaun’s protested over being stereotyped as short, and green, and the school was forced to acknowledge that the new mascot could affect Leprechaun’s self-esteem and social identity development. Following the leuprechaun debacle, school officials began an aggressive effort to identify a new moniker that would not be offensive to anyone. While initially considering names like Warriors, Redman, Braves, Redskins and Savages, all of which had popular support among the student body, school officials were concerned that “The same “namby pamby “ people that objected to the name Indians won’t like these names either.” So the school rejected those names and shortlisted a list of names that included Green Tide, Eagles, Saints and Friars, while dropping some innovative suggestions like Canalleers, Gummi Bears, Green Ninja Turtles and the always popular Fighting Pickles. Sadly, the Fighting Pickles name was dropped when the North Carolina School of Arts objected to another school grabbing their infamous Fighting Pickles name. As we all know, the great mascot controversy at Siena ended with the selection of the name “Saints” as a moniker. Still thirty years after the controversy some fans look back at that era with regret, and wonder why a name like Gummy Bears wasn’t selected. After all who doesn’t like gummy bears…….
COMIC OF THE DAY

The Saints’ seven victories during their streak have come by an average of more than 13 points, with six by nine points or more.
IMPROVING THEIR DEFENSE

TRIVIA QUESTION
What is the largest offensive rebounding advantage for the Stags in the past 10 years?
Answer to follow below
AT THE MOVIES WITH BEIRUT JIMMY
Semi-Pro
★
Summary: Will Ferrell stars in Semi-Pro, an outrageous comedy set in 1976 against the backdrop of the maverick ABA a wild and crazy basketball league that attempted to rival the NBA.
Jimmy’s Review: The only things missing from this film are a plot, script, and capable acting. The movie will bring us all together, I imagine, in paralyzing boredom. Add it all up, and what you’ve got here is a waste of the electricity that runs from the wall to the projector.
SEPARATED AT BIRTH
Beirut Jimmy shares one of his favorite “separated at birth” images related to Siena…..
TRIVIA ANSWER
According to Sports-Reference.com the Stags have had a 16 offensive rebound advantage twice since 2010:
+16 2012-01-06 Fairfield @ Siena
+16 2013-02-12 Fairfield vs. Manhattan
*According to SportsReference.com
HEARD BUT PROBABLY NOT TRUE
Siena Pursuing 4 Star Recruit
Siena is rumored to be heavily involved with Pierre Patate, a player out of Saint McDonald’s in Schenectady. Not a noted basketball school, Saint McDonald’s is known for having some of the best fryers in the world…..
Russian Hacking affects conference standings
Fairfield Coach Jay Young has urged Richard Ensor and the FBI to move forward with an investigation into Russian hacking, claiming that there was ample evidence to support the theory that malicious foreign agents infiltrated and influenced the outcome of multiple basketball games at the Times Union center this year. “Clearly it is not possible that Siena could win 12 straight home games this season while winning only one on the road, the only possible explaination is Russian hacking.”
While some have challenged Young’s allegations suggesting that playing in front of 5000 home fans might give Siena a home court advantage, Young dismisses this possiblity. “The scores of several games appeared to show suspicious activity, and the fact that Fairfield didn’t even score 50 points against Siena is highly suggestive of scoreboard tampering by the Russians. I am confident the results of several games were influenced by Russian hackers, possibly costing Fairfield the MAAC championship,” Young continued, adding that Putin “needs to keep his commie hands” off of the sovereign Independent MAAC conference and stop acting as an agent for Siena. Carmen Maciariello (if that is in fact his real name) denies any ties to Russia but he did admit to being mistaken for Putin at a recent Vodka drinking contest.
Carmen Maciariello sports a Russian Cossack at a recent press conference.
