Was only available to follow the play-by-play since I was out of the country
But the same scenario occurred...... a very good defensive effort by Jay Young’s squad. Only difference was that Quinny made the key play. We have to make FT’s if we are going to win with this strategy.
I actually thought KSP played well in the second half (other than foul shooting). I started watching closely the interaction down low between he and Marfo. KSP was the only Stag big who Marfo couldn't move off the block, and I thought Marfo was getting frustrated. Maybe that's why Marfo ultimately made that pass – which, unfortunately, didn't end well for the Stags. Now, visualize the Stags in future years with JY's defense combined with additional firepower. Could be some exciting times ahead on North Benson Road.
Good points. KSP had possibly his best game as a Stag last night, playing extended minutes because of Eze's foul problems (in his defense, three were phantom calls) and Wassef and Maidoh's inability to keep Marfo off the rim. He still is borderline inept offensively, and is a poor foul shooter. But he is a strong wide-body and played with intensity.
Marfo struggled to finish at the rim in the second half, and that may be why he looked to make that last second pass from a decent position down low. Our leaving a sniper like Rigoni all alone made that decision easier.
I thought the refereeing last night was awful. It wasn’t why we loss, but was a major contributor. Some critical missed calls along with some really perplexing foul calls on the Stags!
What I saw on the replay was a confused Cruz leaving his man Rigoni wide open as Cruz moved towards the basket. Marfo was then able to make a good pass to Rigoni, feet squared and ready to make the game winner. If Cruz stayed on his man , perhaps the stags would have won or Marfo would have taken the ball to the hoop for the game winner. On to Rider game.

In the two games, Rigoni was 4-14 from three before he hit the game winner last night. That's mostly because Maidoh was nearby whenever he was shooting. Chris should have been on the floor shadowing Quinnipiac's best shooter. Maybe Quinnipiac wins anyway, but Rigoni doesn't beat us.
Peterson was the guy who got faked out & left his man. Everyone had to rotate over causing the open jumper for win. Eze should have been still on the court in that situation if the refs didn’t call those crap calls! Onto Ryder, but this one hurt!!!
Well concerning the foul shooting, a lot absolutely depends on who is getting to the line. For instance it is too bad that Landon, who is almost automatic, can't get there much. Instead last night it was KSP who was there the majority of the time and the results weren't good unfortunately. Jay can address the problem all he wants, but this is an individual skill that some are much better at than others. The big thing going forward is acquiring a majority of players who not only will be dependable in that area, but on top of that are proficient in getting to the line in the first place. Can't change the roster for the rest of this year unfortunately.
Agree Nash, it is an individual skill that some are better at, but disagree that focus by Jay will not get improvement. At this point, it's a bit late in the season.
Anthony Johnson was a 50% FT shooter his sophomore and junior year but finished his senior year at about 60%. If you work at it you can improve. You need the right coaching and the incentive to practice. No sense being proficient in getting to the line if you get 0 points out of it.
What complicates the issue is that our big men struggle to finish under the rim. The result is you don't get the deuce or the free throws. This is a major contributor to our offensively challenged team.
"We gave up too many threes and didn't do a good job defending the three-point shot in the first half," Head Coach Jay Young said. "We did a much better job of defending in the second half but just came up a couple of points short. I'm proud of our effort and proud of our fight but give Quinnipiac credit because they executed and made a big shot at the end."
The Stags finish the home portion of their schedule on Sunday afternoon when they host Rider University at Alumni Hall. Game time is 2:00 pm. The game will also be the final men's basketball game at Alumni Hall with the construction of Fairfield's Arena and Convocation Center on the horizon.

We lost because we are offensively challenged and had a bad FT night . Landon is so tired and worn out trying to get open , that what when he he does finally get a little daylight he is not in rhythm cause he is tired and rushes his shot

I'm sure they lose a lot of sleep over this problem (just like we do) because it makes it harder for the Stags to win games. Great example you listed in AJ. Cooley probably had the same feelings regarding his struggles his first few years, and you're right, look at his senior year and how well he did. But it took 3 years for real success. Does that mean Ed didn't try his hardest to fix the problem earlier? So I agree with you, focus from Jay probably will get improvement over time, but like in the case of Ed with Anthony it's not something that can be magically fixed right away unfortunately.
