Fairfield University (11-18, 7-11 MAAC) VS Monmouth (17-11, 11-7 MAAC)

West Long Branch, NJ
LAST TIME OUT
In the final men's basketball game to be played in Fairfield's Alumni Hall the Stags lost 65-51 to the Rider Bronc’s. Alumni Hall was built in 1959 and was the site where Fairfield played more than 500 home games over 60 years. Rider snapped a 4 game road losing streak as Stevie Jordan had 19 points, Dimencio Vaughn added 17 points and Frederick Scott scored 14 points. For Fairfield Landon Taliaferro had 15 points, Vincent Eze added 14 points and Jesus Cruz had 11 points.
DON’T BET AGAINST THESE STAGS
The Stags failed to cover the spread versus Quinnipiac going to 16-13 against the spread this season.
SERIES HISTORY
The Hawks have done well versus the Stags, with Monmouth winning 10 of the 16 games played so far in a series that dates back to the 1994-95 season.
COMIC OF THE DAY
STAG FANS HEADING TO NEW JERSEY TO FACE MONMOUTH
SCOUTING THE HAWK’S
Monmouth is on a decent run winning 4 of their last 6 games, with their losses coming against Rider and St. Peters. Monmouth is a strong home team with only one home loss this season. Melik Martin and Deion Hammand are both playing especially well during this run. Monmouth is a great foul shooting team and the Stags will lose if this becomes a foul shooting contest.
CLIMBING THE POINTS LADDER
As we enter the final week of the season here is a recap of where current Stags stand on the career points ladder……
Jesus Cruz now has 912 points in his career good enough for 55th place on the all time list. He is the points leader among active Stag players. Next in his sites: Herbie Allen(920).
With his 15 points on Sunday Landon Taliaferro now has 700 points in his Fairfield career good enough for 76th place on the Stag all time list. Next in his sites: Colin Nickerson(711).
Aidas Kavaliaskas now has 308 points in his career good enough for 121th place on the Fairfield all time list. Next in his sites are John Ryan.
Wassef Methnani now has 469 points in his career good enough for a tie for 97th place on the all time list with Marty O’Sullivan. Next in his sites: Meishay Gattis (489).
Taj Benning now has 462 points in his career good enough for 100th place on the Stags all time list. Next in his sites are: Tom Squeri and Richard Sanabria(468 ).
Chris Maidoh now has 106 points in his career good enough for tie with Tom Cook for 179th place on the all time list. Next in his sites are: Joe Nelson(108).
Vincent Eze now has 226 points in his Fairfield career good enough for 139th place on the all time Stag’s list. Next in his sites are: Larence Cirina (232).
Kevin Senghore-Peterson now has 144 points in his career good enough for a tie with Rich Schonbeck for 159th place on the all time list. Next in his sites: Joel Pascale (150).
Calvin Whipple now has 140 points in his career good enough for a tie for 162nd place on the all time list with Pete Holland. Next in his sites: Josip Mikulic (143).
AJ Rose now has 58 points in his career good enough for a tie with James Dennis 204th place on the all time list. Next in his sites: Paul Wells (59).
TRYING TO AVOID 20 LOSSES
With the difficult schedule this year, some prognosticators had Fairfield pegged as a 20-loss team this season. As we enter the final week of the season, the Stags need to win at both Monmouth and Manhattan to avoid 20 losses. (Unless the Stags win the NCAA tourney they will lose their final game). Currently Jay Young's name is still on the list of Stags Coaches who have never lost 20 games in a season, along with Ed Cooley, Bob Noonan, Joe Dunn, Jim Lynam, Terry O’Conner, James Hanrahan, Tim O’Toole, Fred Barakat, and George Bisacca.
CLOSE GAMES
The Stags streak of 3 straight games decided by 1 possession ended versus Rider.
700 POINT MAN
Landon Taliaferro scored his 700th point versus Rider
MINUTE MAN
Taj Benning entered the week ranked 210th in the nation in minutes played per game.
END OF AN ERA
The toilet that has overflowed at every Stags game for the past 5 years will be auctioned off after the season, so that one lucky fan can remember the experience of the final days at Alumni Hall.
GOOD FOUL SHOOTERS
Monmouth's George Papas leads the MAAC in free throw shooting at 88.7%, with only seven misses all season long. Two other Monmouth players join him in the top 10, are Ray Salnave and Deion Hammond both shooting north of 81% from the stripe. MU is the only team in the MAAC with three in the top 10. Monmouth was perfect from the line in the first match-up with the Stags going 8-8.
THE STEALS LEADER
Entering play this weekend Monmouth lead the MAAC in steals per game and total steals, averaging 7.9 per contest as a group. Only two teams in the conference have over 200 total steals, with MU leading Saint Peter’s 213-201.
MELIK MARTIN HOT
Melik Martin is in the midst of the strongest four-game stretch of his career. He has posted four straight in double figures scoring performances for the first time, and is shooting a whopping 17-of-24 (71%) from the field and 4-of-5 (80%) from three. Martin has added a 12-of-17 mark from the foul line during the streak as well.
MONMOUTH AT HOME
The Hawks are 9-1 in the OceanFirst Bank Center, falling only to Saint Peter’s. MU will play its final three games of the regular season at home.
MIRACLES AGAINST MONMOUTH
Fairfield has had the good fortune of pulling off many close victories against the Hawks, with the Stags winning 81-79 in the 1995 match-up in a game where Kyle Commodore hit 7 three point baskets in 9 attempts. In the 2017 home game, Aidas Kavilaskas's late fouls shots sealed a 69-66 victory for Fairfield. Other close games included miraculous victories with last second buckets, most notably earlier this season Allan Jeanne-Rose, grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast, driving the lane for a contested layup to give the Stags a last second victory over Monmouth. Similarly two years ago in miraculous fashion, Jesus Cruz fielded a difficult pass and made a quick move to the basket, a move that some Monmouth fans moaned was a walk. But there was no call and Cruz scored a bucket with 1.2 seconds remaining for a Stags win. Cruz's quick feet and bucket gave the Stags an exciting win on a night where some Monmouth fans believe they actually witnessed Jesus walking on hardwood.

Alumni Hall Announcer Demonstrating Blatant Bias against Rider Broncs
Barely mentioning the Bronc's Sunday afternoon, the Alumni Hall public-address announcer James Fitzpatrick continuously showed blatant favoritism toward the hometown Stags, giving them a hugely overblown introduction and inciting cheers when the Stags came out. Whenever Fairfield hit a go ahead basket, this same PA announcer would shout, "and the Stags take the lead!" Bronc's head coach Kevin Baggett complained bitterly to game officials and to Paul Schlickman regarding Fitzpatrick, requesting that his Rider team be treated more fairly.
Following an emergency meeting of the athletic department's leadership team, it has been decided that when the new on campus arena is built, in the interest of Fairness, Fitzpatrick will need to share his responsibilities with a more neutral “visiting public address broadcaster.” Reportedly, starting in the 2021-22 season, Boffo the Mime has been hired to share the announcing duties with Fitzpatrick. Visiting teams hope that Boffo will help neutralize the home court advantage that will surely come with Fitzpatrick and Fairfield’s new on campus arena. (With apologies to Jim Fitzpatrick and thanks for his many years of loyal support to the Stags )

Here an update on a few single season marks that could be challenged this season:
3-Point FGs Made
Landon Taliaferro currently has 58 made three point baskets this season, however he is no longer on a pace to finish in the top 10 for 3 point baskets in a season. It will take a Texas A&M like game for hi to accomplish this. Taliaferro is also no longer in the top 10 for 3 point percentage in a season, but he is in range of the mark if he has a few high shooting percentage games.

SINGLE SEASON RECORDS.
