2 field goals in 2nd half. We have become unwatchable. What’s happened to us? Ironically Texas A&M, a team we beat in December, just beat 17th ranked Auburn.

I have so much to say about today's performance, and while I support Jay Young, I felt like he lost his players tonight. More on that perhaps at some other time.
Monmouth's half court trap is very effective, our guards seem to panic when they cross half court and see two defenders rush towards them. Monmouth has disrupted our offense and created lots of turnovers with their traps.
We are so mechanical with our weave, everyone knows its coming, where each stag player will be on the floor and when they can complete a trap to create a turnover. Its so pathetic that we have not adjusted to this. Everyone is doing it to us and they don't even need to be successful in the trap. even if the ballhandler escapes the result is a poor shot or shot clock violation because we are wasting too much time 40 feet from the basket. You can't run the weave 90% of the time. Its just too easy to defend. We were a much better offensive team in the first half of the season than we are today. Its because we are too predictable.
There are times where Taliaferro is uncovered behind the three point line. No one covers him at the start of the play because they know the first move will be to start the weave and hand the ball off. How about just passing the ball to the open player and telling him to shoot?
We also run the same 3 or 4 plays to start each game. Here is the first play of the last 3 games: Quinnipiac vs Fairfield - 1st Shot -3 pt attempt Landon Taliaferro Rider vs Fairfield - 1st Shot -3 pt attempt Landon Taliaferro Monmouth vs Fairfield - 1st Shot -3 pt attempt Landon Taliaferro
I wonder what will happen Friday night? I lost track of how many times we have done this but if I'm the opponent, I know the first play is likely to be 1) a three by Taliaferro or a lay-up attempt by Eze. I'm not sure we have run any other play this month.
There is one game left. Practically speaking it won't affect our seeding. How about we try something different and let the open players shoot? How about we stop leaving no time on the clock and forcing shots? How about using offensive concepts rather than so many set plays?
Sorry I am so unimpressed with what we are doing offensively. We're not great offensively but we're also not this bad an offensive team.

Team absolutely is this bad offensively. No doubt JY would love to trade the weave and the planned sets for some guys who can go 1 on 1, break guys down off the dribble and get their own shots. Even a creative playmaker would be a huge benefit.
The last thing I want to see is these guys trying to be something they’re not. Can imagine the reaction on this board to guys jacking up undisciplined 3’s because of a “why not, we suck anyway” attitude?
It’s fairly remarkable this team has stolen 11 wins, possibly 1 or 2 more, through nothing more than a real commitment to defense and rebounding (not the case last night).
Some of this is already improved with the influx next year. Need much more to compete effectively with the talent in the conference, which I think is also going to improve.
"We started the game slow but still managed to be within three late in the half and within eight at halftime," Head Coach Jay Young said. "Salnave had a big night and that continued in the second half. We missed some assignments so I'm disappointed in the way we played. But give Monmouth credit because they are well coached and had some great guard play. We have one regular season left and have the conference tournament coming up so we will need to regroup and be ready."
Monmouth: "I’ve been talking about how my team is getting better throughout the year," Monmouth coach King Rice said. "Today, these guys came ready. Their energy was there right from the beginning. The way we guarded the ball to start the game, when you make people play offense that far away from the basket, you’re going to give them problems. That gave us the opportunity to create turnovers and steals and get out in transition.".....“The way Ray started the game, all the way through the first half, that’s a special night," Rice said. "When you have a guy having a special night like that you just try to keep getting him the ball so you can keep getting him the right shots. That was all Ray, that’s his ability to score the basketball and when he’s focused and getting to his spots nobody can guard him."
Monmouth's Ray Salnave had a career high 34 points against the Stags.
Fairfield will finish up the 2019-20 MAAC Regular Season on the road when it travels to Manhattan College on Friday, March 5. The game is slated for 7:00 pm on ESPN3. On January 10, the Stags beat Manhattan 68-60 in Alumni Hall by scoring 40 points in the first half of the game.
Rutgers Players Supporting Jay Young Discussion in 'Men's Basketball' started by BigEastPhil, Yesterday at 10:33 PM.
"Piscataway Mike and myself were at the Fairfield at Monmouth game tonight. Myles Johnson, Ron Harper Jr and Paul Mulcahy were behind the Fairfield bench in support of Coach Young. Also Coach Boylan was at the game.
Funny moments were when Coach Young got into the faces of some of his team and seeing Myles and Harper cracking up.
Coach Young was at our game last night.
Fairfield is awful. Coach has a lot of work to do to bring in his type of players."
I am cancelling my AC reservations. I support the Stags but the distance, seeding and absent offense just doesn’t make this trip worthwhile. Yes maybe we can win a squeaker vs. Manhattan, and Siena will be looking past us, but this year began very promising and now it’s embarrassing. Next year I am hoping we are much better. Dare I say “the future is bright”.
Many MAAC opponents had freshmen and sophomores in key roles beating us. We have to elevate recruiting...above our competition
Benning and AJR should be told to drive the lane all game long. Aidas should be told to shoot all game long. Learn a play for Maidoh who can outreach anyone. Learn how to be aware of open men, i.e. cross court passes, etc.

For those that can't go or won't be going now to Atlantic City for the MAAC Men's Basketball Tournament, all the First Round and Quarterfinal Round games are on ESPN3. The Semifinal Round games are on ESPNN and the March 14th Championship Game is on ESPNU.

Well I do think Caleb Green will indeed make a major difference next season because he is a "real" PG who has the speed, athleticism and talent to make a difference in how the team functions. Can't say for sure how much Chef or the one commitment will help, although I'm guessing there will be a positive difference with those two. That said, Jay and his staff better have a good recruiting season, especially with the proposed new NCAA rules probably going into effect, or else the hoped for improvement of the team will be happening at a much slower pace than we would all like. But as far as this season and especially the current situation, if you had told me at the start of the year that we would have 11 wins plus a victory over a team from a major conference plus a lot of competitive efforts against other strong opponents even in losses, I would have said that's not terrible at all. The problem is a lot of those efforts took place earlier in the season and now to be frank, those efforts seemed like they were a long, long time ago. An honest assessment I think is that for whatever reason, the team has gotten worse recently. Some might even say much worse (although I might not quite go that far), and this is not a good trend for a program that is trying to elevate itself. A season is a grind with many ups and downs, but a large majority of teams tend to improve along the way as lessons take hold. Will the end of this season and what it represents be a harbinger of what might happen in future years or is this just a blip in the radar of how Jay Young's teams will perform down the stretch starting next season and beyond? At this point I think that's a fair question to ponder.

There was significant talk on this board prior to the season about how offensively challenged the Stags would be during the 19/20 season. Knowing that, my hope was as the season progressed I would be able to say the stags have shown some improvements during the Jay Young era. Not so!
