Info about another baseball recruit. www.theday.com/high-school-sports/20200417/checking-in-with--bowen-baker-wheelerHe picked Fairfield because of its beautiful campus and a solid Division I baseball program as well as an opportunity to play as a freshman and sophomore. There was one more reason: “The coaching staff at Fairfield is going to allow me to enter the program as a two-way player (hitter and pitcher). This will allow me to see what I am strongest at.”

There was one more reason: “The coaching staff at Fairfield is going to allow me to enter the program as a two-way player (hitter and pitcher). This will allow me to see what I am strongest at.” Since I also follow and watch the baseball team a bit (though not nearly as passionately as the hoops squad), I appreciate this information that you have located. So thanks Va. A couple of comments. First, it looks like (unlike with the basketball team) that the Stags are doing a good job of finding talent within Connecticut, surely an important aspect of the recruiting process. Being able to be in the running for local kids every year is important I think. And actually in this case, both these future student-athletes mentioned are from the same eastern area of the state, so obviously Coach Currier and his staff have good connections there. The other thing I want to say is that being a two-way player is (unlike the pros) not that unusual in college. I know, because my nephew is currently an assistant coach at William and Mary and they have had more than one player in the past couple of years serving in that very type of role. Even back when he played at Bryant over ten years ago, the Bulldogs had a couple of kids that did the same thing. Oh one final thing. While I'm sure based on the fact that this guy comes from a small school that probably plays against relatively weak competition, nevertheless both his hitting and pitching numbers are off the charts. 515 BA with 5 homers in just about 20 games. 82 pitching strikeouts in just over 36 innings. Wow, that's impressive! Will it translate on a bigger stage? I can't wait to get back up to the baseball field next spring to find out.
