Sadly that is going to be the deal going forward. Mid-majors are now the farm system for top programs
Well it's not like this is something new. It's been happening now for quite awhile but unfortunately it's about to get much worse, especially if the new NCAA transfer rules go into effect after their June meeting. But from an individual school standpoint (talking Fairfield here obviously), this certainly presents an opportunity to really get good in a hurry and maybe have a special year at some point. Certainly this will be a test for Jay Young and his staff to see how quickly they can adjust to the situation. Stay ahead of the curve so to speak in this new era of college hoops.
What is about to happen is something that is at a whole different level from what we have ever seen before. I remember reading an article when Sean Grennan went to San Francisco that stated when Sean stepped on the floor for SF, he would become one of only a handful of college players to have taken the court for three different programs(Seton Hall, Fairfield and San Francisco). The potential now exists for people to change school every year. With Ferron Flavors in the tranfer portal he will likely be one of the first players ever to play for 4 different programs (South Mountain Community College, Fairfield, California Baptist and wherever he goes next year). You could have an unethical coach pilfering players from his opponents during the season. This is not going to be a good change for midmajors. And while we could benefit right away, I don't think its a good thing for players like Rich Kelly to be able to transfer within conference without sitting. I'd be happy short term if we pick up some guys but long term this is likely to hurt us more than help us.

Unethical coach pilfering players? No, couldn't happen because they are all so honest, right? C'mon. Seriously though, you're exactly right in saying this will be bad for many mid-majors. And in reverse many of the 'big-boy' schools with (of course) their "honest" coaches might have the ability to remain dominant every year without having to beat the bushes so much trying to find, identify and then coach up the freshmen talent they are able to acquire. With ready made and proven performers playing right before their eyes on TV every night at a mid-major contest right near you, you have to understand that you are probably watching a product surely to be negatively effected the very next season. Surely the slippery salesmen will be out in force in the near future to wreck all your dreams.
That said, if this is reality and the way it is going to be, it's important for a given MM program (Fairfield in this case) to be ahead of the curve and be a leader in somehow being good salesman (in an honest way) in order to put together a good team each year. That was my basic point above. It's who adapts best to the situation who will thrive, because after-all when all is said and done, the Stags success or failure will depend on prevailing against their MAAC competition. We're all in the same boat (except maybe Iona), right?
Any rule change is going to help the High Major schools. Its happened for many years. What we have to do is succeed under any rule change. Be better than an any Mid Major...... When Iona took immediate advantage of the Sick Grandma rule started with Mo Mo Jones..... they took advantage of that very quickly
We have to take advantage of signing these "Free Agent" players. We have to be the Best Mid Major at doing it.
The worse rule change was to allow High Majors the opportunity to have At-Large NCAA bids for losers. If a team did not win their Conference "Regular Season" Title, nor win their Conference "Post Season" Tourney, they should not be allowed a 3rd Chance to succeed.

There certainly is a potential for a player to transfer every year. However, the new rule, once approved is not a new rule. Rather it is a waiver of an existing rule requiring an athlete to sit out one year when transferring. It is a ONE TIME waiver. If u transfer out after that and have not graduated , then u must sit a year out. Then one time waiver should help to put some level of a cap on the transfer merry go round. Of course athletes who have graduated can transfer and be eligible immediately as our own Vincent Eze was for the stags this year.

I'll take your word on the technicality of the change, but nevertheless it will in reality serve the same purpose as if it were a new rule. And yes you are right, it means only a one time change, no exceptions (apparently), so kids better do their homework or else things could backfire on them if they don't get put in a good situation with their new school. My prediction, unlike yours, is that the cap will be raised MUCH higher than it currently is because young people are more apt to take certain chances without carefully weighing all the options. Actually I hope you are right and I am wrong because I don't like this one bit. But we'll see.

I guess there is perceived opportunity at BC for playing time as two good MAAC players transfer to chestnut hill. BC needs help in order to compete in the competitive ACC. As a follow on this opens up opportunities at Rider that appears to have a good recruiting class coming in based on the article. Kevin Baggett generally recruits very well, however the recruits have not translated into league championships or post season appearances that should follow the talent he recruits.
I've always thought Scott was an underachiever or just underutilized at Rider. He had the talent to be a dominant player in the MAAC - but seemed to be fine with the role of efficient contributor. Maybe in a new situation he can really shine.

BC now in the running for Purdue grad transfer Matt Haarms (along with 8-9 other schools) per Jon Rothstein. What is the attraction to the Heights all of a sudden?
If someone wants to have a meaningful and memorable last season of college ball, you think they would opt for a school/program like Fairfield.
