*This was the hometown of former Stag Hank "The Hammer" Foster
Looks like another talented guard to add to the recruiting list. But by mentioning Hank Foster you brought up good memories of a very talented player who unfortunately didn't quite achieve everything he was capable of because of some problems that forced him to miss a year of play. Really blossomed in his final year with Terry O'Connor though. And at least talent-wise, he was really one of the better players to ever play for Fairfield.
Yes I remember hank foster and would agree he blossomed his last year. A very respectable field goal percentage and almost a 80% FT shooter which is so important for a big men who tend to get fouled often down low. Not sure why he did not play for all four years, perhaps academic issues?

A very talented player with maturity issues. His parents were educators and he was a capable student. After being given chances, he was dismissed because of his not being able to adapt to rules. I do not remember his being a bad guy. I thought that he eventually appeared at Fordham, but I I am not certain.

Well there was a specific incident that led to his departure from the team. I don't want to drag up 30 year old stuff but I think maybe Hank had too much of a love for music......

Apparently he didn't appear at Fordham because after being off the Fairfield team for one season (1979-80) he then came back and had two productive years to finish his career (see sports reference above as posted by 79). For some reason Terry O'Connor was able to get more out of him than Fred Barakat, part of the reason probably being he was able to mature more as he entered young adulthood. He was always friendly when we would talk to him at some of the events we used to have where booster club members interacted with the team at that time as I remember. So yes he wasn't a bad guy at all. Far from it actually. But as an underclassman I don't necessarily think he and Barakat saw eye to eye very much. And now that I think about it, wasn't it Hank who hit a long jumper from deep along the right sideline to DEFEAT Fordham in Fred's last home game as the Stag coach? Seem to remember that. Maybe someone can back that up?
Lol! Listen, I’m fairly new to the board and the same age demographic as a large percentage of the board...so I get it. Just find it funny how many threads wind up being a stroll down memory lane. Not a knock, high regard for this board and if I didn’t enjoy I wouldn’t follow. Just an observation!

Yeah great you enjoy the memories even if the original topics sometimes morph into some memory lane type things that many of us who have been around the program for awhile can vividly remember. But you have to understand why this happens so much, that being that the history of Stag basketball was in many instances much more relevant and better than it is now, hence the influencing force that makes us want to reference the past. Whatever, please keep reading (and commentating) because that's what makes it fun to keep putting our thoughts out there in the first place. Our goal as a group I think is to make this the best board in the MAAC!

It's a bit funny. I'm just imagining a recruit checking around on the forums for comments on his recruiting.... sees 2 pages on the Fairfield board... clicks... and then sees it's really 2 pages about some random player from the 1970's

Random? Hank Foster was one of the better players in the program's history ... and he went to the same high school as the potential recruit. That's hardly random.

And actually I think that illustrating a knowledge of past history by patrons of the program is a good thing in that it shows people are knowledgeable and care. Certainly nothing that should turn-off a recruit. Just the opposite actually. Surely better than if NOTHING was on the Fairfield board regarding Lawrence or any other prospective future student-athlete. In the long run it probably won't make any difference anyway.
