Marist Wins 2020-21 MAAC Women’s Basketball Regular Season TitleMarist College captured the 2020-21 MAAC Regular Season Championship. The title marks the 13th for the Red Foxes, and second straight. Marist (15-3, 13-3 MAAC) will enter the 2021 Hercules Tires MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship as the top seed. The Red Foxes now seek a MAAC-leading 13th championship and the team’s first since 2014. One of the most dominant programs in MAAC history, Marist women’s basketball has transformed under the leadership of Brian Giorgis. The Red Foxes’ all-time leader in wins, Giorgis has led the program to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, five NCAA Tournament victories and a Sweet 16 appearance. Marist has been led by a big senior season from Willow Duffell. Duffell has been filling up that stat sheet, averaging 11.7 PPG, 8.7 RPG, and 2.5 APG. Adding to Duffell are Sarah Barcello, averaging 12.7 PPG, and Trinasia Kennedy, averaging 9.7 PPG. Freshman Caitlin Weimar has chipped in with 8.6 PPG and 7.2 RPG. The Red Foxes have earned an opening round bye. They will play the winner of the No. 8 /No. 9 matchup on Wednesday, March 10 at 12:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals on ESPN3. maacsports.com/news/2021/3/5/marist-wins-2020-21-maac-womens-basketball-regular-season-title.aspx

The stags finishing fourth this year in the regular season is a major disappointment IMO. During preseason Joe Frager spoke glowing about the experience of his team and how they were set to challenge for a championship. For all of his career wins and there have been many, he has yet to be able to break thru the Marist/Quinnipisc stronghold on MAAC championships. Of course the fourth place finish will all be forgotten if he wins the tournament!

Really, 74? The Stags start the season 3 weeks late due to COVID protocol, finally open against UMASS and play poorly. Regroup, win 3 straight, only to get another 20 day break. Come back, sweep Rider and split with Marist and then get a 22 day break due to most of the players having the virus. Come back to beat St Peter's, (didn't play well) and then get swept at Quinnipiac. They then beat Iona, lose multiple players due to COVID protocol, beat Monmouth twice with 9 players dressed and then have the rest of their season cancelled, meaning they will go 2 weeks, yet again, without playing, as they head into the tournament. Its a season to forget, not to judge.

Sobro, Really yes. All teams have faced adversity with this COVID related season. Some teams overcome the adversity others use it as an excuse.
