I believe some on this board are far more knowledgeable than me on the inner workings of our coaching staff. I was wondering — did all three of our assistant coaches equally share the responsibility of preliminary recruiting (i.e. deciding who to make the initial scholarship offer to) or did that responsibility fall disproportionately to Sellers. Having the answer to that will help me know what type of individual we’ll be looking for to take Sellers place on the coaching staff.

It's a valid question. So I believe Jay has mentioned in the past they all take a part and all have their own prior relationships they leverage. I know some staffs will divide geographically but I think Jay wants his coaches to find guys just based on relationships an/or leads.
From seeing prior recruit's posts I know they have mentioned speaking with other Coaches on the staff beyond Sellers when they receive offers but I am sure Sellers was a key member of recruiting. I hope we are able to find a veteran with good connections. We still have 1 spot to fill for the upcoming year.
Yes one more scholarship to fill assuming Taj and Jesus do not count against the 13 scholarship players and the school is willing to fund the extra two scholarships for one year. Nine scholarship players on roster currently plus three incoming scholarship players makes for 12 players against 13 maximum. IMO I would fill the remaining scholarship only if a DIFFERENCE maker transfer is available. Lots of just average 2 star or less players is not the formula for success as we are all painfully aware.

Recruiting connections will obviously be very important no matter who it is (although I'm pretty certain we are done as far as bringing in any more players for next season). It would be nice if that guy could also be a good instructor too of course. Anyway, I'm sure Jay has a lot of people he has in mind based on his many years in the business. How long it takes to fill the spot is anyone's guess, but I don't think he will rush his decision based on an extreme current emergency. Anyway, stay tuned (and check the website 'Hoop Dirt' for daily rumors).
It is interesting that Siena and coach Carmen have just filled their open spot that was created when Bob Simon left, and the guy they brought in was a coach who connected to Carmen himself in tying to recruit him to a different program than Siena back in the late 1990s. So you never know how the past will effect the future.

I watched the first two minutes of Garcia's youtube video and kept thinking ---that's what I thought Cheff was going to be for us before I saw Cheff in game action. Looks to me at least from the video that Garcia does more than simply rebound.
Looks like Sellers will most likely be the underdog in his first game as a head coach.
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 21h Source: UConn will open the 21-22 season in Storrs against Central Connecticut.
And does anyone have a guess as to when we'll be announcing who'll be replacing Sellers. I'm assuming we'll want that coach in place before the next live recruiting period, but I don't know when that next recruiting period is.

If the past is a reflection of when when Jay took over two years ago, I don't think he will be in a rush to bring in a person just to fill a spot if he believes being patient can help him secure a better candidate. As far as the beginning of live recruiting, I think I heard that sometime mid-late June is now the official start, therefore there is still some time to get a new guy on board. Actually I have also heard that in a pinch, making our DBO Jim McDonnell a 'legal' temporary recruiter is actually an option, although I do not believe they will just promote him to that full-time position based on lack of experience. Anyway, unlike with a lot of rosters the Stags are actually pretty well set for the future (for now anyway), therefore being patient and waiting for a month or so is probably the best way to go. At least that's what I imagine Jay Young is thinking.
RJ Thompson at Rutgers would seem to be a possibility.
While I don't have any claim to know who might be the guy, certainly I think you have identified someone who would make perfect sense based on what I just read about him (from the Rutgers site). Anyway, based on the fact that live recruiting is right in the process of starting up again, I believe we will be hearing about a decision in the not too distant future.
RJ Thompson at Rutgers would seem to be a possibility.
Perhaps u mean TJ Thompson currently Director of Baketball Administration at Rutgers? “T.J. Thompson enters his second season as the Scarlet Knights’ director of basketball administration. A First Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection and four-year starter at George Washington University under coaches Karl Hobbs and Steve Pikiell, Thompson co-founded the D.C. Blue Devils New Hampshire non-profit and AAU program, where he had been program director and head coach for six years.” If so that would be a knee to the nuts for Jim McDonnell who currently is the Director of Operations at FF. However, I would think if Jay was going to promote Jim to assistant coach he would have done so already and would currently looking for a new director of basketball operations. He may have to hold off making an appointment until the beginning of the new fiscal year. We should know more next month when the new fiscal year starts at the University.
