Stags will be hosting Manhattan in a doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM on Thursday in the first two games of a 2 out of 3 series with the 'if' game being played on Friday if needed. Hopefully it won't be (because the Stags won the doubleheader of course). And if they advance they will then host the 3 other remaining teams left in a double-elimination event starting next Wednesday, May 26th. Anyway hopefully things go smoothly this week and next in order to validate this most historic season for the Fairfield baseball team.

The Stags won 11 more games than second-place Monmouth and were the only team with single-digit losses in the MAAC. This season the Stags earned the programβs first-ever national ranking as they were ranked 23rd in the nation by Baseball America. Fairfieldβs .970 regular season win percentage is also the highest in NCAA history. The Stags return to the postseason looking to claim their first MAAC Championship since 2016. The Manhattan Jaspers are coming in as winners of three of their last four games which helped them secure the final seed in the MAAC Championship. maacsports.com/news/2021/5/17/2021-maac-baseball-championship-field-set.aspx

First opponent in Manhattan could be dangerous based on the fact that they have good hitters up and down the lineup. Scoring runs have not been a problem for the Jaspers. Even had a reasonable amount in the 4 games against the Stags. However regarding their defense and pitching, the numbers in those areas are horrendous (to put it mildly). Everything that has happened the past two months is thrown out the window now of course. So while I expect some danger if our pitching is off a little bit, nevertheless I expect a healthy amount of offense to more than overcome any problems that may occur. It's important to set the tone considering the ultimate goal of winning the championship will have tougher opponents in the way next week. Too much at stake to let up now. Go Stags!

The MAAC Tournament will run through Alumni Diamond as the Stags earned the top-seed with an astounding (33-1) record, the highest regular season winning percentage in NCAA history. The Stags first made noise around the country by winning the first 27 games of the season, earning their first-ever national ranking by Baseball America, and were ranked for three-straight weeks. The Stags dropped out of the Top-25 in Baseball America after their bye week, but are still ranked 27th in Collegiate Baseball News and 29th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's (NCBWA) poll. Fairfield also kept their spot as the top team in New England in the most recent NEIBA poll. With all that success, the Stags secured their fourth MAAC Regular Season Championship and their third in the last five years.

I sent Zach Dayton an email yesterday asking whether the public would be allowed to attend the games. He said yes, starting with today's doubleheader. That's the first I've heard of the games being open to fans.
I can't make it today but will be there next week. Check it out if you're nearby.
