The season-tickets email got me to thinking about the upcoming OOC schedule. I did hear some rumors at the Fairfield-Canisius baseball game three weeks ago. Most of it we already know, but a couple of things were new -- at least to me.
• We'll be playing Providence again, on the road. • The original 2-for-1 deal with Boston College has been reworked. We gave back the home game for cash. • Coach Young said he was looking for a multi-team event on one of the podcasts. That has changed. Fairfield will now play 29 games, with no MTE. • The email said 15 home games this year. I suspect that Sacred Heart will be one of them; no idea on the last.
Here's how it looks:
Home Loyola Wagner Holy Cross Sacred Heart (?) One more game, probably a mid-major
Road @ William & Mary @ UMass @ Boston College @ Providence
Everything is subject to change, of course. I just thought I'd pass along what I heard. If anyone can confirm or deny, fire away.

Gave up a home game for cash? That’s one of the most awful things I ever heard. Giving up the opportunity to host an ACC school at WBA for some extra coin?! No wonder we can’t draw in Bridgeport. Apparently we would rather host teams that have no chance of drawing a crowd versus pulling in 5,000+ for a game that actually would have the community’s attention and interest...

Well how much cash is the question? I doubt we’d get more than 2k for that game in the arena coming off a year with no attendance and the pandemic hangover. Let’s not forget the financial impact of the pandemic on the last awful year for all athletic budgets at our level. And now we get a reason to head up to Boston.

I thought we were saving the BC home game for when the new arena opens, that makes sense to me
Selling the game to BC makes us look “nickel and dime”. It’s a dumb decision. I understand budgets and shortfalls and all of that. But, I believe that FU should be looking to boldly come out of this pandemic situation. Instead it looks like we’re going to be passive as usual. We need dynamic leadership and execution.
People are so unrealistic on this board. Each and every year the Stags like all other mid-majors go on the road for “ money” games picking up considerable sums of cash to provide budget funding closing the gap for recruitment, travel etc. That simply the way it is! If they did not travel to money games the budget gaps would need to be funded by tuition increases or increased athletic giving donations. The schools from the power conferences rich with TV revenue buy home games and pad their season records. FF missed the opportunity years ago when they could have join the Big East and today share in the revenue generated by that league.

Don't quote me on this but I thought I had heard that even though we are playing at Boston College this coming year, there is the strong possibility the Eagles will be coming in to play the Stags in the new Convocation Center sometime in the future. If so I imagine that contest couldn't be scheduled until at least the 2023-24 season based on the time it would take to complete the new building. That said, count me as one of the disappointed ones that thought we were indeed playing Boston College at home this year, something that has supposedly been discussed as being kind of a done deal for quite awhile. Anyway for what it's worth, if this team and program truly wants to attract attention, competing against a BC or similar type program, whether at our new home or even in the arena if necessary based on interest, should be a priority in scheduling in the future.

One further comment on what might be a smart way to go about scheduling a Boston College (or similar team) for the new arena. When I lived in Nashville and Belmont opened up their brand new Curb Events Center, they were able to get Vanderbilt to come down the street (the schools are only a mile apart) to be their first opponent. I was there as one of the 5,000 people in the packed house, and it certainly set the tone for the mid-major Bruins who as everyone knows have become a power at their level. So maybe something similar would be a great way for the Stags to start off in the new building, especially if it was assured that it would be ready to host an event at the start of the 2022-23 season. Just something to consider I think.

I'd love a marquee big name program but would be happy if we could get a Fordham or Holy Cross to open it up. Would really like to have a shot to win the opener in the new building, but not against Rider or St Peters.
Get Holy Cross and you open up with memories of one of the best games ever in AH.
