Well of course East Catholic has rightly been getting a lot of publicity the last few years relative to their basketball team. But now with this kid involved, the baseball squad is taking a bow. Actually there have been a couples of articles in the paper (Conn. Post) recently that gave a heads up as to how special this kid might be. Therefore this development is not really a surprise to the people who follow this sort of thing from a state perspective. Mozzicato had committed to go to UConn to pitch. Don't think he will be going there considering a first round signing is well into the millions! I hope he eventually becomes as good as his potential suggests he might be.

Day 1 of the draft is tonight. Twenty rounds total, with 612 selections. Which is half the number of 2019 (40 rounds, 1,217 selections). Truth be told, I hope everyone comes back. But more power to Guerrera if he can cash in. I would think he's one of the top 612 players in the country, though I don't know for sure. I also don't know how far the contract money is spread out over the 20 rounds. At some point in the lower rounds, it might make more sense for him to return to Fairfield and try to improve his draft standing for 2022. Unless he simply chooses to pursue his dream with any team that picks him. Awful hard to turn down a chance to play Major League Baseball. Realistically when you get beyond the first 10 rounds the money is not very enticing. But OTOH a normal practice which happens is that MLB teams agree to pay for a given player to finish his education as part of the deal. So I guess theoretically Justin could agree to sign and play and if it doesn't work out go back and finish his education at Fairfield. First of all of course, he has to get drafted. So let's see if he will have this type of choice in the next couple of days. Actually 20 rounds and 612 selections are not a lot relative to previous drafts. So to be honest I would not be surprised at all if he isn't drafted. But just the fact that we are discussing the possibility is certainly exciting I think.

I just read that he might be getting a signing bonus of about 5.4M as listed based on where the 7th pick is 'slotted' in the system. So when he signs (and I'm sure he will), that young man will not have to worry where his next hamburger is coming from, right? Fantastic situation, and because he is from Connecticut I'm sure he will always be someone we can root for as he works his way up the ladder in his professional career. BTW Frank has now become the highest draft choice from the state since Bobby Valentine was selected #5 way back in 1968. So this is big-time news from a local angle!

Day 2 (today) features Rounds 2-10. Tuesday finishes off the draft, with Rounds 11-20. We'll know soon enough.
Frank Mozzicato was projected as a late first round/early second round pick. No. 7 is likely beyond his wildest dreams. He will receive a multimillion-dollar contract from the Royals, who appear confident in their ability to sign him. No way he can turn down that much guaranteed money.
Rich Eisen interviewed him after his fourth no-hitter this spring. Seems like a great kid.

Another nice outing from Sansone in a loss. 5IP 3H 1ER 8K.
Watching the draft today....
No Stags in rounds 2-10, although Quinnipiac's C was drafted at the end of the 10th. I think he is the only MAAC player, so far. I was looking at the draft history of the NECBL. It looks like they typically see a dozen or so picks of guys that have played in the most recent season... though I think the MLB draft is being held later in the year in 2021(?) In any case - you'd think the guy that is leading the league in HR/RBI and hitting .330 might get a call... or even the MVP catcher of the MAAC.

In any case - you'd think the guy that is leading the league in HR/RBI and hitting .330 might get a call... or even the MVP catcher of the MAAC. You're right, the draft is being held much later than the normal (until 2019) first week of June. I think the stated reason for the change to now is they wanted to tie in the interest to go along with the MLB All-Star game being played this week. Last year they did have a very small Covid induced event that lasted something like only 5 rounds, and I'm not sure when exactly that was in the summer. But I believe this will probably be the norm from now on. As far as the NECBL, while it does attract good players, the fact is it has nowhere near the prestige of the CCBL and therefore doesn't produce nearly the amount of MLB draftees, therefore I'm sure your estimate is probably correct. As far as who actually gets picked and where as opposed to who doesn't, that can surely seem to be a mystifying thing to the average fan with the Quinnipiac catcher who's name is Colton Bender being the perfect example. 10th round for a guy who hit .266 this past season with very little power seems like a stretch when our catcher Caruso hit over .400 and appeared to do a good job behind the plate yet hasn't been picked (at least to this point) seems strange. But the other kid has a reputation based on previous years play, probably is a great defensive catcher, and the pros tend to make their choices based on future potential rather than relatively small sample recent performances. Anyway he represents MAAC baseball so I guess it's good that he got picked. But it does seem odd and I certainly hope at least one of our Stags join him tomorrow in seeing their names connected with a major league ball-club.

I am surprised by the Bender pick giving the mediocre performance in the MAAC. However, he did managed to get an invite to Cape Cod League where he put up decent numbers. I am surprised none of our guys have been picked. Both McLoughlin and Sansone have had impressive performances in the Cape Cod League and Justin is likely MVP of the NECBL. Fordham, BC and Bryant all have had picks.

Just to be fair in looking at these facts, in the report in the paper today regarding Bender, he has been described as an elite defender, something the pros pay special attention to in regards to catchers. As far as pitchers and I guess more specifically our pitchers, for better or worse now speed on the radar guns takes precedence over a lot of things including even ERA performance. Whatever, maybe today will bring better news, but whatever happens, certainly nothing can be taken away from the year that Trey, Mike and all the other Stags had this past season.

Gotta imagine being taken by the Mets doesn’t help the cause for their return. Either way this is awesome and great for the program!
I feel pretty confident guessing there have never been two Stags taken in the same draft…

What’s the highest a Stag has ever been picked? Keefe Cato, pitcher, 1979, taken in the second round by the Cincinnati Reds. And Keefe did make 'The Show' for a couple of years.

Gotta imagine being taken by the Mets doesn’t help the cause for their return. Either way this is awesome and great for the program! I feel pretty confident guessing there have never been two Stags taken in the same draft… Yeah I'm pretty sure you're exactly right about that. Just shows how unique and special this past season has been. But as far as Trey and Justin are concerned, first of all congratulations to them (obviously), but while being drafted by the Mets (or any other organization), while exciting, nevertheless doesn't guarantee them a bundle of money based on the place they both were picked. There are some perks, the most important being their ability to negotiate to finish their college education for free if they so desire. But OTOH if they were to return to the Stags and have truly special years next season, a higher place in next year's draft could mean a lot of guaranteed money. Basically you have to be in the top 10 rounds to lock in at least a couple hundred thousand guaranteed I think. So all I'm saying is they could go either way with their decision, a decision BTW they will have to make within a very short period of time. It will be interesting to see what happens with both of them.
