Gotta imagine being taken by the Mets doesn’t help the cause for their return. Either way this is awesome and great for the program! I feel pretty confident guessing there have never been two Stags taken in the same draft… 2 Stags were drafted in 1982. Here are the 18 FU players drafted before today: www.thebaseballcube.com/college/schools/profile.asp?T=20835&View=Draft

Amateur analysis.
I believe McLoughlin has graduated and could return as a grad student. He is 22 ('99) and might just be ready to make a run at a professional career. 22 seems on the older side for a college pick, but as I browsed through today's rounds, there were more than a handful of guys born in '98 and even '97. For him the main thing, I think, is that he needs to stay healthy and look to add a few mph. I would imagine he's off to the minors, but there is always an outside chance he could return to Fairfield and work on those things, while making another run at a MAAC title/NCAA appearance (signing some posters... enjoying some local "fame.")
Guerrera has another year and I don't think he has graduated. He strikes me as a guy that (now that he has eyes on him) could make a significant move up the '22 draft with a strong follow up season. 2B with pop. Work on taking the ball to all fields and his glove. I feel like there's a better than 50% chance he's back.
Hope both guys return. Either way - none of this should hurt recruiting and it's a great day for the Fairfield baseball program.
2 guys drafted in the same year!?!?!
* I don't know anything about either Stag's academic situation... just guesses based on their time at Fairfield.

Completely agree about Guerrera. He could move up significantly in the draft next season. In fact, he could be one of the best players in the Northeast and one of the best mid-major players in the country. A 50/50 return seems about right.
I'd love to have McLoughlin back, and I think he could make a move up the draft board as well with a strong 2022 season. But if he gets hurt again, all bets are off. He's ready now to play pro ball. He should take his shot.
Congrats to both men. Another big day for Fairfield baseball.

Fairfield University Stags in the major leagues!!! ⚾️✨ Congratulations to Trey McLoughlin and Justin Guerrera, selected in the 16th and 20th rounds in the 2021 MLB Draft. The duo becomes the 19th and 20th Stags selected in the major league draft and the first-ever by the New York Mets. "It's an incredible achievement to be drafted by the New York Mets," McLoughlin said. "It's been a difficult past year for me especially with the pandemic and our season getting canceled to finally get back to normal this year only to miss a few weeks with an injury. I've had to face quite a bit of adversity over my four years at Fairfield but I've managed to find a way past it all. I'm unbelievably excited to begin my pro career." "Trey is one of the hardest workers on the team each year he has been with the us," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "His maturity and physical presences on the mound has jumped to another level over the past two years which has made him attractable to major league teams. I'm very excited for him and his family who have supported his journey through amateur baseball and now have a professional baseball player in the family.""The initial thought (after being drafted) was everything paid off and everything happened for a reason," Guerrera said. "But then you immediately come back to reality and know there's a lot more work ahead and the ultimate goal is to make it all the way to the top and being a professional baseball player in the major leagues." "Justin was truly one of the most valuable players on our team during the amazing run of our team this spring," Coach Currier said. "He was a tremendous leader as a junior for our team the entire year. We are all very proud of his accomplishments while here at Fairfield during his short time. Justin is one of the best all-round athletes I have coached. Our coaching staff is very grateful for his contribution to our program over his three years. The Mets thinking enough of him to take him in the 20th round is a sure tribute to his work ethic and athletic skills."fairfieldstags.com/news/2021/7/13/baseball-mcloughlin-and-guerrera-drafted-by-the-new-york-mets.aspx

Trey is gone. Justin leaves wiggle room but I'm less optimistic about his return than before.

I think their signing bonus is $142k or less. It might be worth another year to increase their draft stock and maybe get a bigger signing bonus. Trey graduated so he probably would prefer to focus solely on perfecting his craft. Justin has another year to graduate and it might make sense to stay one more year to get his degree and see if the Stags can take it further.

From Mets mlb.com beat writer: www.mlb.com/news/mets-notes-from-day-3-of-mlb-draft“He definitely thought I’d fit in well, and he was right,” Guerrera said. “So it’s really cool to continue my journey with him and really embark on a professional career.” Honestly with most MLB teams offering to pay for the final year of education and the players being able to take a chunk of classes during the fall / winter semesters, makes total sense to go for it now. Good luck to them both!

Graphic showing the schools with the most players taken in this year’s draft. ASU, who we split with, had 5 players drafted while Texas had 7 players drafted.

I would think as 16th and 20th round picks the signing bonuses wouldn't be much (certainly less than $100k) and neither guy would really have any leverage.
Still looking for some better info on how money is spread to lower ranked picks - but I did find an article from 2016 that states 60% signed for less than $100k... 40% for less than $10k... and 35% for less than $5k. However, in 2016 there were 1200 players drafted vs. 600 in 2021. No info on what those 2016 stats mean (as far as what % of drafted did sign, etc.) - but I think there it's likely bonuses in the late rounds are ~$50k.
Whatever the case may be... there are MANY worse ways to spend your early/mid 20's than getting paid to play baseball.
I noticed Bryant College had 2 guys drafted pretty high - in the slotted rounds.

Found a Mets draft tracker that estimates the 11-20 spots with $125k value each. More money than I thought.

Justin Guerrera Signs with New York MetsFAIRFIELD, Conn. – After recording one of the best offensive seasons in Fairfield University Baseball history, shortstop Justin Guerrera grabbed the attention from major league scouts around the country, leading him to the next step in his dream to become a major league baseball player. G uerrera officially signed a professional contract with the New York Mets, foregoing his final two collegiate seasons. Guerrera, who was selected in the 20th round of the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft, was one of two Stags to be drafted by the Mets. "It's definitely an exciting moment," Guerrera said. "It's a time where all your hard work up to this point has paid off but there's a lot of work to be done and a long road ahead. You have to keep your nose down, eyes forward, and keep working hard." Guerrera was a key offensive leader for the Stags in their historic season which featured a program record 39 wins and the school's first ever Top-25 ranking. The shortstop tied Fairfield's single season record with 13 homers, which also led the MAAC. Guerrera also finished atop of the conference in RBI (45), runs scored (45), and total bases (111). He was named First Team All-MAAC and also earned two Player of the Week awards throughout the season. The junior capped his season by going .421 (8-for-19) in Fairfield's four games in the NCAA Regional. The biggest of those hits came against Arizona State as his three-run homer put the Stags ahead in a game they would eventually win. For his career, Guerrera slugged 20 homers, tying for the seventh most in program history. He also recorded a .297 batting average with 133 hits, 93 runs scored, 92 RBI, and a .511 slugging percentage. "This is definitely something I have looked forward to my entire life," Guerrera said. "I'm obviously overjoyed and it's something that I've wanted my entire life. Now that it's finally here it's a big feeling." Guerrera is ready to use that excitement as motivation as he begins his minor league career in the Florida Complex League. "I think the biggest challenge is going to be continuing to compete," Guerrera said. "Not only with yourself but continue to compete against more talented people and more talented players. Just having that confidence that I had from college ball and college summer ball to the professional level."
