Like Steve Smith, finished his college playing days at West Chester. And then picked up a grad degree in accounting/finance according HoopDirt posted in the Sellers thread. Obviously basketball is his calling. So we get a coach with a strong academic background and deep AAU experience and success. That’s a good get for the Stags.

I agree. And in thinking about why it took so long for the program to replace Sellers who left over two months ago, maybe Johns was the person all along who would be coming here. Obviously he had important things to finish up with regarding his AAU team, something he did quite well obviously. So instead of rushing to get a new assistant in place back in May, Jay Young took his time. I've got to think his patience will pay off in the long run.

Well all of your points could very well be the reason why Coach Johns did not join the staff earlier. Another plausible reason is the '21-'22 budget year does not begin until July and Coach young may have been told to hold off hiring until the new budget year begins. The Covid protocols placed considerable budget pressures on all universities. I agree a coach with considerable AAU experience will be like Johns is a good get for the stags,

RE the budget-if one month of an assistant’s salary affects the overall budget then FU has real problems. I’ve heard Kevin Lawlor has a reputation for watching ever nickel but that nickel was already budgeted had Sellers not left.
"I'm excited and honored to have James Johns join the Fairfield Men's Basketball program," said Fairfield Head Coach Jay Young. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our staff. James has seen unparalleled success as a head coach at various levels of basketball, his winning pedigree will be invaluable to our student-athletes. James represents exactly what we look for in our staff and we can't wait to have him and his family join our Stags family."
Great story indeed. Just from reading this it appears as though Coach Johns' has an outstanding ability to work with players on an individual basis to help them perform to the best of their ability. But even more important from this is that he seems to have an unusual amount of connections among coaches in the industry, particularly at the high school level. Both these traits are super important for an assistant coach to have. Thanks for posting this 79.

Coach Johns seems to have good connections at all levels of recruiting. Having a varieties of different type of Asistants is a good thing.
All good! However, can he recruit potential all league players to FF? Time will tell. We need to recruit 1-2 players each and every year that that become all MAAC. Recruiting is the key to success .
