Wales only goal was on a penalty kick. Otherwise Turner would have been the goalie in a shutout win. I don’t follow soccer that much. At the World Cup, how often does the player usually score on a penalty kick. When awarded with a penalty kick, does the player usually score around 99% of the time. I’m assuming virtually no one expects the goalie to prevent a goal at that level in a penalty kick situation. Would that be correct?

Bale hit a perfect penalty shot -- top right corner with power. Turner guessed right, but had no chance.
Matt did get caught out of the net late in stoppage time. Bale was a second away from chipping the ball over Turner's head into the goal, but Kellyn Acosta tackled him, picking up a game-saving yellow card. If Bale had gotten the shot off, it would have been one of the most disastrous goals in USMNT history.

But what really turns me off about soccer is the the "stoppage time". They also added minutes while in the stoppage time that only the Ref had a clue how much time was left. They really should stop the clock during play when necessary and eliminate this stoppage time nonsense at the end. I have tried for years to get into this sport and understand it is the most popular sport in the world. But I just can't get my head around it. Either way, nice job by Matt.

I’m assuming virtually no one expects the goalie to prevent a goal at that level in a penalty kick situation. Would that be correct? in regulation time , 80% converted in penalty shoot out of a tie game it drops to 70% total guessing game for the goalie based off the kickers past tendencies (thats why you will see a keeper dive completely to the wrong side) bc you do not have time to react once the ball is struck. goalies will watch film and study to see if a kicker “tips his pitches” so to speak. turner guessed right , may of even had a fingernail on it, but the kick was perfect as mentioned above. turner made a huge save on a PK (i believe against mexico) to help us qualify (?) with in the last year or 2 some kickers will even faint or hesitate one way and try to go the otherway on PKs , you’ll see some of those completely miss. and some kickers just choke sometimes. pretty fair comparison would be to a 75% free throw shooter in the final 4. the spot light is pretty bright a goalie wont be getting bashed for allowing a PK to score , but that defender would be in soccer countries for the egregious tackle in that situation take this as a grain of salt , i watch soccer every 4 years lol

Either way, nice job by Matt. not 100% sure but looked like even the US at the end was faking injuries to try to get a stop in play to get subs in. wales was doing it throughout the game. the stretcher even came out once for a cramp, and then the player was up and running. makes me cringe. not sure i understand the substitution rules either. all mentioned is kind of a turn off

A great background story from ESPN on Matt Turner's soccer career beginning with his time as a Stag goal keeper and his embarrassing start in net against Iona: How USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner went from walk-on to the World Cupby Dan HajduckyJust before Halloween 2013, Matt Turner, a 19-year-old walk-on at Fairfield University, is playing for the first time his sophomore season. It's a miracle he'd even made it to Division I soccer, only committing to the sport three years earlier. Last year he was so green that the open secret among the Stags was to kick the ball out of bounds or bomb it forward, anything to avoid passing back to Turner and his lubberly size 15 cleats..... www.espn.com/soccer/fifa-world-cup/story/4808833/how-usmnt-goalkeeper-matt-turner-went-from-walk-on-to-the-world-cup

^That’s a fascinating read ‘73. Among the items that were incredible in Turner’s story is the fact that before they ever met, Turner and his wife had the same locker at Gillette Stadium, he with the Revolution — she as a cheerleader for the Patriots. Besides cheerleading for the Patriots, Ashley was getting a master’s degree from Harvard and running a nonprofit for breast cancer survivors. The link goes to a photo of them taken when Turner threw out the first pitch at Fenway. images.app.goo.gl/wyyceTSagxxgWt2U8

US and England in a scoreless draw. In a game that the US was expected to lose, the US played very competitively and might have won. Turner was terrific and shows that he has learned much from his time at Arsenal. In a post game segment the commentators gave a shoutout to Fairfield.

Really nice plug for Matt Turner and Fairfield University this morning by Mike Barnacle on Morning Joe.
Can't buy the publicity FU has received due to Matt's success. And the unusual path of his entry to the sport makes it an interesting story.
Need a win, a tie won't do it. - 2 PM on Fox.
Good luck Matt and Team USA.
