There has been a lot of speculation about the power five conferences. The ACC could see the primary football schools ( Florida State, Miami, Clemson) lead a revolt by repealing the grant of rights agreement through a majority vote and head for the SEC. This exodus might trigger Carolina and Virginia (long thought to be in the BIG10 plans) to bolt for the BIG. What do the remaining basketball focused schools do? Maybe pick up Richond from the A10 since it has a profile similar to Wake Forest? VCU? (probably not) Raid some Big East schools that could be tempted by a better payday and get reunited with BC, Pitt Syracuse? In the meantime if UCONN goes Big12 to rescue its' football program and fix its' balance sheet does the BIG East poach Dayton or VCU from the A10? There is also the possibility that if the ACC implodes Syracuse and Pitt could look to the Big12 and provide Uconn with travel partner. This could lead to more raiding of the A10 and Big East by the rump ACC. Basically if some of this comes to pass it will be felt all the way down to our level. I hope we have some contingency planning going on.

I think the more interesting story here is what will happen to Boston College. They have been bottom-of-the-barrel in the ACC for several years now. If the ACC implodes perhaps they try to resurrect a Big East football league with Pitt, Syracuse, and UConn. But then who else? I think Pitt and Syracuse will go to the Big 12 leaving BC desperate for a landing spot.
Should be interesting to see how this plays out the next few days. San Diego State wanted to leave the Mountain West Conference, then changed their mind. Apparently, the conference is now telling SDSU they are no longer in the MWC and they owe the conference a $17 million exit fee. San Diego State lost the NCAAT championship game to UConn a few months ago.
An article detailing what’s occurred between San Diego State and the Mountain West conference up to this point. It looks like a decision will be made on July 17th concerning SDSU’s membership.
Edit: Not sure if you’ll encounter a paywall for the article so here’s field of 68 daily’s summation of its highlights:
Among the highlights: SDSU President Adela de la Torre says the Aztecs will leave, and wants to know if they really have to pay the full $17 million exit fee. MWC officials say cool, freeze the school’s 2022-23 distribution share (more than $6 million) as the first part of the exit fee, and boot de la Torre from the MWC board. SDSU says just kidding, we never left. Twice. MWC officials send another letter, thank them for their membership, and say July 1, 2024 will be SDSU’s last day as a conference member. It’s a fascinating article that lays out some of the reasoning behind the letters (SDSU reminds the league how much NCAA tourney $$$ it made everyone) and is worth a read ahead of a July 17 MWC Board of Directors meeting where they’ll discuss the school’s future with the conference.
Let’s see. Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah moving to the Big XII. Rumors of Oregon and Washington looking to join the the Big Ten plus Clemson and Florida State looking to leave the ACC.
The tweet below was created in jest but at this rate, it might turn out prophetic.
