No Stags taken in the first two rounds. Read this advice piece from the #9 pick in the 2009 MLB draft, Jacob Turner. Has a listing of all the first round picks in that draft. Look who was the 22nd pick. Don’t think many of the 21 picked ahead of him had better careers than the 11 time All Star selection (so far). He was actually the second outfielder that the Angels selected in the first round.

The Red Sox chose Canisius pitcher Matt Duffy in the fourth round. The 115th pick in the draft is valued at $580,000.

Found some video of Duffy pitching. I was reading a little about this pick. Someone on the Sox must've liked Duffy, but he was also likely chosen so high because he was seen as an "under slot" pick - meaning the Sox think they can sign him for less than the assigned "value" of his slot, leaving more $$$ to sign other picks. ex. his slot was valued at $580k - but the Sox might think they can sign him for $200k - leaving them $380k more to spend on other draft picks like their 2nd rd. pick who people are saying is an "over slot" guy and will require more than the assigned value. Anyway... I didn't know about this MLB financial draft voodoo, but I guess it is part of the equation.

It took a while, but Charlie goes in the 19th round to Seattle. He is the 577th pick in the 2023 MLB Draft.

I'll guess he goes to A&M. He's probably getting more in $NIL than he'd get from a 19th round signing bonus. There's always an injury risk and the possibility of never making professional ball... BUT... a season at A&M is probably as good as a rookie ball and if he's successful he might find himself looking at a significantly higher draft spot in 2024.
For reference... then 2022 ECAC PotY just went 42nd at a $2m value. Could he do similar?
Still... I think it's crazy he lasted that long.

I agree me too. For all of the accolades he received i was surprised that he was drafted so late. What do you think the scouts saw that made them reluctant to draft Charlie sooner? If he has a successful year at a higher level conference his draft position next year will be significantly higher.

After SHU shortstop Sam Mongiello got picked in the 10th round, I figured Charlie would go in the 11 to 15 range. I'm a bit surprised he went so late. Maybe I shouldn't be. I think he's considered a mediocre defensive third baseman with an average throwing arm. He doesn't run well. And he's only had one great offensive season in the whole of his amateur career. I would love to see him go to A&M and light up the SEC. But that move comes with massive risk. If he gets hurt or fails to produce in any meaningful way, he will have likely lost his chance to play Major League Baseball. Even with a decent NIL payout, Pags would be making a huge bet on himself. But if he does have a great year, he would definitely go much higher in the 2024 draft and attain significant money. He also gets a Master's degree and access to the A&M alumni pipeline, so it's nice to have options.
My guess is that he signs with the Mariners. He's going to take his shot.

And your quick analysis is spot on regarding the pros and cons either way. I just flipped a coin with heads being Seattle and tails being A&M (seriously I did just that) and it came up HEADS. So will he be off to Mariners camp this summer? Obviously I have no idea despite the coin flip result. Stay tuned I guess.
