Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University have reached an agreement for their men’s and women’s basketball teams to renew their "Battle for Fairfield" series starting next season, on the weekend before Thanksgiving; Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Webster Bank Arena. The men’s teams last played at the CT6 Classic in the 2013-14 season opener while the women’s series has been in hiatus since the 2009-10 campaign.
“The Fairfield-Sacred Heart games bring a great deal of excitement to the city of Bridgeport,” Director of Athletics Gene Doris said. “Local college basketball fans have come out and supported this game in the past which shows their passion for this series. What has really driven the excitement of this match-up has been the excitement between the two student bodies. I am pleased the series will resume next season.”
“We look forward to the resumption of the basketball series between our two institutions,” said Sacred Heart University Executive Director of Athletics Bobby Valentine. “Pioneer fans have always supported these games in an enthusiastic manner and I am confident that we will continue to do so going forward.....
“I am excited to see the resumption of the Fairfield-Sacred Heart series,” Fairfield University Women’s Basketball Head Coach Joe Frager said. “This series has always been well received by our fans and by our students. I am sure women’s basketball fans in the Fairfield and Bridgeport communities will come out and support this series as they have in the past.”....
“The series will be a great showcase for both schools, our Arena and for all college basketball fans in the area,” Fairfield University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Sydney Johnson said. “Last year’s game vs Sacred Heart drew 5,000 fans in our building with both student bodies treating it as an ‘event game’. I'm glad we could make this happen for the years to come.
The current agreement stretches over a two season span, 2015-16 and 2016-17, with the option to renew after one year.
