Reindeer is right Segura and Rose can't play together.
Same thing as yesterday. We were outscored when Rose and Segura played together, but we outscored SD by double digits when they were not in the game together. You need a high percentage scorer at the 2 guard position.
This was the type of play I expected all weekend. At least we finished strong. A win is a win and congrats have to go to the players and coaches for turning it around today.
I think Sydney called some good timeouts today and got strategic with substituting at the end. Anyone else notice the change?

I have to agree with 74. IMO Degnan still needs some seasoning to adjust to the D1 level of play. His last four shots, by my count, have all been air balls. He has a deer-in-the-headlights look on the court from my vantage point at the Arena. Should he adjust by the time the meat of the schedule comes around, it will be heady times in Stagland.
Interesting that in the chatter about who should be playing at the 2, a position that should also be under scrutiny is the 4, with (at least right now) Kirkland vs. Coleman as the prime choices. They have both played about 20 min. per game, yet Coleman is the second leading scorer on the team at almost 10 PPG. Mike is less than 3PPG. Rebounding has been about equal. I like the game of Kirkland (a little more luck in shots going down would make him look a lot better), but actually I am really surprised and happy that C. Johnson has seemingly come back to school as an experienced Jr. with a much improved game. Therefore I think right now he would certainly be my choice to get more time.
Kirkland had a very good game today, but like Nashville, I think we need to see more of Coleman Johnson. Toward the end of regulation, I would have put Coleman in at Center, as with a double digit lead, I think he is a better defensive player than Gilbert or Sidibe.
Deegnan is not ready to play D-1 yet. Tyler Nelson on the other hand is ready to go now. Rose and Stevie J. Are not playing well , shooting 13 -54 and should see very limited time until they step up. Segura is the future , let him play live with his freshmen mistakes and build for the future
I'm with 74 on this one. I like Degnan's upside, but he is showing signs of freshman jitters. He has missed the rim on his last 4 shots, and he is 1-8 from the floor so far. I think he's much better than he's played, but is a player that may need to get a little more practiced and comfortable before he is ready to contribute big minutes.
40 Degnan, Kevin...... Minutes: 23 total 7.7 avg Shooting overall 1-8 .125 3pt 0-4 .000 FT 0-0 .000
And you don't get rid of any of that by sitting on the bench. This is a player who had multiple A-10 offers. You must spot him for double digit minutes, rotating him between the 3 and the 4. 2 or 3 minutes at a time don't get you comfortable.
Frankly, this was the kind of game I expected all weekend, but that was not to be...... We might have had a chance to beat the other 2 teams had we played like this against them. Well, better late than never!
Anyhow, I'm pretty confident that Tyler can prove to be one of the best players to ever wear a Stag uniform, and possibly as good as Joey D, time will tell! He played an awesome game cool customer! Now that was like 39 years ago and I haven't forgotten how impressed I was.... Tyler's stroke seems effortless and deadly. Kirkland and Sidibe also played great games inside, hope that continues and comfirmed why Sydney started Mike instead of Coleman or someone else, at least for today.
By the way, Bridgeport, I'm not sure that anyone has done it since, but I believe DeSantis had 24 on his first start in Springfield. The first night in the tourney he had 22 I believe and the next night he started and had 24.
Segura didn't play as much tonight but he should be sharing time with Rose at the point with Nelson at the 2. Give him a chance, he might make some mistakes but is the best penetrator we have. He'll need to finish better and/or pass off, that will come with more experience. Degnan won't get as much playing time but when he is in, he should be focusing on the inside game, not taking 3's like he has done, least not yet. Still waiting for Smith, Chappell, and Treatt to get their chances to play. Smith looked good in the scrimmage, going to the boards strongly, improved from last year. Imagine if we had him in there with Tyler and Marcus, and Rome dishing off? That would be a nightmare for any opponent!
I know KJ did not have a great line but would we have won with someone else getting bulk of his minutes?. I doubt it. His work against the press was excellent. Remember how we crumbled vs even token pressure last year. . As joe. said on post game, he controlled tempo and played some very good defense I'd like to see him get 8 points a night but he did critical things to get the win.
Tyler Nelson is no doubt a talented player and where hes going to be most affective is when he and Marcus are in the game together thus not allowing defenses to load up on either of them. I'm not jumping off the bridge to say he's great for he is still a freshman and he will be tested now that he has shown promise...Mike Kirkland had his print all over this game as well. If you watched closely you see he is the inbounder against the full court pressure ,he is the first option because he always gets open when teams trap. He causes havoc on defense because he guards everyone and rotates very well. Today he was on full display and maybe 3 of his assist were to nelson. I have no negatives...we won!! Oh and Sidibie was a beast today!! I think we We will eventually need Malcolm to give us some minutes and one of our pg's to get 6-8 assit and knockdown open shots...
Tyler, quite simply, is a hoops assassin. His court demeanor and his deadly stroke will have Stag fans jumping out of their seats for years to come. Yes, Sid brought him along slowly, but once the door opened, he charged on through. That is the sign of a special player. He is a natural born shooter, something the Stags haven't had in years, and seems to have a real passion for the game. And the more effective he becomes, the more it will open up opportunities for the other Stags. Having witnessed every minute of each tournament game this weekend, I can say the Coyotes are much better than their record indicates IMO. They were within one foul shot of knocking off Sam Houston the other night, and gave Wofford some anxious moments Saturday. Both the Terriers and BearKats are preseason favorites for their respective conferences, and I really think the Coyotes will make some noise in the Summit before the season is out. I guess what I am saying is that my glass, once half-empty, is now half-full. Go Stags!
Hoops assassin indeed! Well put nittany. Actually this performance is a duplicate of what I witnessed multiple times last winter in very important basketball games for Central Catholic. Yeah they were high school games played against only so-so competition relative to top flight scholastic ball. But on the other hand they were huge in importance and played before frantic emotional large crowds such as the 6,000 or so people that were at the Tsongas Center in Lowell and then a couple days later the Boston Garden in the state tournament. Most of the time when the pressure was the greatest, Tyler produced. So this performance didn't surprise me, although I have to admit that given the cautious release of his court time by Sydney, I was wondering if maybe his confidence was down a bit and would have to be brought up. Therefore a performance like this certainly should excite all Stag fans who are hoping to hang their hat on SOMETHING to give hope for the future. And I also think Kirkland opened some eyes today./

Go Stags!!
stagal, not sure of exact numbers that Joey put up that weekend in Springfield, but if my memory is correct I believe the Stags had a guy that topped both DeSantis and Nelson for his first effort as a starter. Seem to remember being down at Monmouth (the old gym) where he got 27 points on opening night in early 1990s. Kyle became a nice player but not a great one, so there always has to be a little caution in proclaiming someone an all time great off of one or two performances. But I certainly think, given a relatively injury free career, Tyler has a chance to do some special things for sure in the coming years.
Nash, Lets hope you are wrong. My memory of Kyle is of dribbling off his leg in the maac tournament. No comparison on shots though. This kid can shoot. The question is whether he can consistently get open. With him and Casey Smith on the womens team, this could be a great run.
Again, I have said it in the other threads, we have the talent this year. That is not what we have to overcome. Tyler has the POTENTIAL to influence the program early in his career (in his own unique way, of course) much like NEEDHAM. We also have talent on the bench - Steve Smith can shoot and I seem to remember Chappell can, too (both just SOPHOMORES).
Teams will try to shutdown Tyler now. We'll see how he responds. Marcus and Tyler can become an exciting 1 2 punch! They should be working in practice on isolated 2 on 2 plays (assuming this is already happening).
So, Point is a big question mark and I do think you need to get Smith or Chappell on the floor more. I understand that Amadou and Kirkland are rising, but maybe you rest one with Smith or Chappell or rest the Point with Smith or Chappell (let Tyler play point for a span in the game).
Thoughts? Just think we'll need more scoring threats on the floor over time.
