The oldest continuing All-Star high school basketball event in the nation which will if I'm not mistaken be the 61st edition and will feature both a boys and a girls game will be played this Saturday, March 23rd at the Shehan Center in Bridgeport starting at 2:30 PM with the boys playing the first contest of the afternoon. Same format as always with the best of Connecticut boys facing a team of solid players from New Jersey in what has almost without exception proven to be a very competitive contest with kids who play hard and want to win (unlike many other All-Star match-ups) because the coaches who are in charge insist upon the effort. As far as the girls, it's in house with the best of Western Connecticut against the same from the eastern end of the state with (again) a high priority on competition.
As far as the girls, to be honest I can't comment on who will be playing because I really don't follow them during the season. But as far as the boys are concerned, first of all the Connecticut coaches will be two of the best and well-known guys in the state in Luke Reilly of East Catholic as well as John Mirabello of Northwest Catholic. And some of the players include Gianni Mirabello (John's son), Samson Reilly (Luke's son and 6'3 guard going to Quinnipiac next season), Norwalk's Jaylen Brown (discussed extensively in the HS News and Views thread), Najimi George from Kolbe Cathedral, Victor Payne from Cromwell (who I believe the Stags might have interest in), Yale bound Conard guard Riley Fox (who probably will be named state POY) and Anthony Williams of state D-11 champ Windsor, And while all of the above played in the state association (CIAC) this past season, two others that I know of who originally played in the state for at least two years but then went away to prep school will help fill out the roster: those being former Windsor star Rashawn Tibby and former Northwest Catholic stud London Jemison (who at one time was connected to the Stags through the Verbal Commits site). There may be a couple others added as well. As far as Jersey, I can't tell you anything specific because I don't have the list. But traditionally they ALWAYS bring some good players who match up well against the hosts. As testimony to that, the total overall record between the two states is almost even with the Nutmeg state holding a very slight edge over the years. Anyway for those who care to attend, this should be a fun afternoon of basketball.
