They lost to GMU 63-59 in an away game Friday. Missing four guards including their starting point guard. Started three Frosh. Smartly, GMU used full court pressure to test the young Cavaliers.
When CCSU just took us to OT, hard to imagine the game at UVA will be all that competitive, but if we get some shooting, better ball handling from the guards, continued production from Amasip Mikulibe, and stay out of foul trouble, who knows? Would sure be a program win if they can pull it off. Go Stags.
And GMU was missing two of their starters ... and still were able to beat UVA (in front of a sellout crowd of nearly 10,000). I'm guessing UVA won't be coming back to Fairfax any time soon.
The game against UVA will be a tough one to win. They are still and ACC team, with ACC recruits, playing in their own building. That being said, I'm hoping our guys can make a game of it. I expect a very low scoring affair.
Not only was GMU missing players, so was Virginia….. especially at guard. Tevin Jones 6-0 Fr. should return for our game. I see 4 components that describe of Virginia:
1. Defense, Defense, Defense – Virginia's defense is very good, and the pace of play is on the slow side. Our halfcourt offense needs to more efficient. Wade and Nickerson need to be more aggressive offensively as creators. Needham cannot be in the mode of doing too much. And our ballhandling/turnovers need to improve.
2. Lots of 6-8 players – and only one player taller (6-11). Might see a little more of Amadou this game. Mathews length, Jumping, and ability to play above the rim will be tested on both ends of the court. Can he play like a 6-7 player? I think we will see tonight.
3. Guards are young - they will miss their best guard Jonte’ Evans, but hopefully we can take advantage of young guards. But make no mistake, we are playing against ACC talent
4. Best offensive player is 6-6 Joe Harris – 19ppg, 8rpg, 4-7 from the Arc vs GMU. We will see if Nickerson can be a defensive stopper on him. Gilbert defense could be important here.
This will be a tough game for the Stags, playing Virginia in their home opener. Keep it close, and then hit a few 3-pointers to win it. But I would say Virginia is a 12point favorite.
Pomeroy has us at a 22% chance of winning. Their prediction is 59-52 Virginia.
vastagman, will you be at the game tonight..... I will be there with Nashville and I think Rave, 74 and Paulie will be there. Anybody else going to the game?
The amazing Daniel Curry has us losing by 8. Central vs St Peters should be an intersting game. And the debut of Billy Baron tonight for Canisius. Wacth this one closely. My expectations are that Canisius and Billy Baron will be very good.
SAINT JOSEPH'S 75, Yale 63 Penn vs. Delaware: TOO CLOSE TO CALL VIRGINIA 59, Fairfield 51 Boston U. 69, CANISIUS 62 Central Connecticut State 66, SAINT PETER'S 61 QUINNIPIAC 68, American 59 RUTGERS 73, Sacred Heart 64
The Cavaliers are looking for their first win of the season and are hoping to stretch their home-opener winning streak to 16 games. Virginia's last home-opening loss was a 62-52 loss to then-No. 25 Clemson back on Dec. 7, 1996.
Virginia lost its season opener last Friday at George Mason, 63-59. Sophomore Joe Harris (Chelen, Wash.) led the Cavaliers with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Akil Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C.) added a career-high 11 points and seven rebounds. Virginia started three freshman (Justin Anderson, Taylor Barnette and Mike Tobey) in its season opener for the first time in school history. Freshman Evan Nolte (Milton, Ga.) also played as Virginia missed the services of senior point guard Jontel Evans (Hampton, Va.) and sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon(Norcross, Ga.).
Virginia is meeting Fairfield for the third time in a series that dates back to 1981. The teams are meeting for the first time since 1991 when Virginia defeated the Stags, 84-52. Fairfield opened the season with a 64-63 overtime win over Central Connecticut on Saturday, Nov. 10. Kevin Matthews led the Stags with 15 points. The Cavaliers are 14-0 all-time against MAAC opponents
At this time an All-Jesuit Championship game on November 23 at MSG of Fairfield vs. Fordham is still possible. However, that might change in a few hours.
Does anyone have a link that can be used to watch ESPN 3 for tonight's game? Cablevision does not have it and I can't access ESPN 3 online if my cable company doesn't carry it.
At least we can listen to the game on WICC, I guess!
