Senior Maurice Barrow (Queens, N.Y.) earned a spot on the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Men's Basketball Third Team. Barrow earned recognition as the MAAC’s “Sixth Man of the Year” last season. The 6-5, 210 pound senior averaged 8.9 points and 4.0 rebounds off the bench for Fairfield, and returns as the Stags top scorer. He scored a career best 25 points, and added 10 rebounds, in a home win over Rider.
The team was announced by the conference office this morning. Barrow joins Michael Alvarado and Emmy Andujar of Manhattan, Ike Azotam of Quinnipiac, Rob Poole of Siena, as well as Chris Manhertz of Canisius on the team. The MAAC will announce the 2013-14 MAAC Men’s Basketball Preseason All-MAAC Second Team tomorrow.
Comprising the All-MAAC Preseason Second Team are Chavaughn Lewis and Adam Kemp of Marist, Daniel Stewart and Anthony Myles of Rider, and Desi Washington of Saint Peter’s.
The All-MAAC Preseason First Team will be announced tomorrow.
Unforturnate that sophs Amadou and Marcus Gilbert did not make any of the All-MAAC Teams. But not surprising, as they they still have to prove themselves. We talk a lot about our freshman, but it is really our sophomores that have to step-up their game and carry this team. That includes Coleman and Jenkins, plus the transfers (Grennan and Malcolm Gilbert)

If you just go by the numbers that our returning players put up last season it is very understandable why the Stags are not getting a lot of love from the people who decide the preseason teams. Remember, Mo is the leading returning scorer on the team, and he averaged less than 10 points a game. Does that mean that players such as Amadou, Marcus, Colemen and the rest of the experienced players can't rise to the occassion and get spots on the POST season teams, which is really all that counts? Of course not! But at least at this time it appears as though we have a squad that may consist of a lot of good players, yet may be lacking in the obvious exceptional performer. And to be truthful this might not be a good thing until a couple step up to reach all league status to join (hopefully) Mo Barrow. This is something very important to watch as the season plays out, and a positive answer to this question would probably mean success not only this year, but the next 2-3 as well.
