Subject: Stags Basketball Update from Coach Johnson
January 23, 2014
Dear Fairfield Alumni and Supporters of Stags Men's Basketball:
Last Saturday afternoon, on Basketball Alumni Day, our young Stags scored a breakthrough win defeating MAAC, conference-leading, rival Manhattan College in a hard-fought battle on our home court, the Webster Bank Arena. We truly appreciate your continued support, and understand that prior to the Manhattan upset, our record has been disappointing. Our staff and players share in that disappointment, but we have never stopped working, improving and fighting to get the results that we all want.
Previously, the hard work had not resulted in winning. Most recently, we were frustrated at home in the buzzer beater to St. Peter’s and last Thursday night’s close loss to Niagara. In both contests our young men learned that closing out an opponent is never easy. Having their efforts bear fruit against a Manhattan team picked to win the MAAC and who defeated them easily two weeks ago is extremely important. Our schedule has been extremely challenging for a young team. But, playing the best has helped us grow as a team. I am reminded that Coach Pitino of Louisville said of our team: "Fairfield has played us the best of anyone this season so far." And, while our wins have been few, they have been over quality opponents like Bucknell University who went to the NCAA tournament in 2013.
I assure you that the coaching staff, the players and I will continue our tireless efforts to bring a MAAC Championship to you, our loyal supporters. To reiterate, our squad is young and will continue to learn and improve. Our only senior is Maurice Barrow who leads with his heart and by example. We recognized his achievement of joining the 1000 point club on Saturday.
The future is bright. On the recruiting front, we are excited to welcome a talented 2014 class to the Fairfield Basketball program. I could write about every one of our recruits but one example is Jerome Segura, a speedy 5’10" point guard from Houston, Texas. Jerome plays his high school ball for Charles Ament at Langham Creek High School. Basketball junkies may recognize that Coach Ament groomed Mackey McKnight, the starting point guard for the #15 seeded Lehigh team who knocked off #2 seed Duke in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. We expect Jerome, along with his incoming freshmen teammates, to join a solid core of returning players, to notch historic postseason successes for Fairfield Basketball in the very near future!
The expectations will always remain high. Fairfield Men’s Basketball is tied for the most wins (109) in the MAAC over the past decade. At the same time, it has had a 100 percent graduation success rate. We are firmly committed to that level of success both on and off the court. We hope that Saturday’s win is the springboard to success for the core of this team that will return for the years ahead and a run to the MAAC Championship this season.
Go Stags!
Sincerely,
Sydney Johnson
Head Men's Basketball Coach
