This seems desperate, we dont recruit jucos and all of the sudden we are having a terrible season and we are offering them right and left. To tmaac71's point, what scholarship?
I agree with the assessment of desperation -- not so much from this offer but from the number of offers we reportedly still have out when we went 1 over the 13 limit with the signing of Lakoju months ago.
Sydney must be sensing that he misjudged the level of patience that Stag fans would have. Whatever the reason for the relatively tough OOC schedule, it certainly hasn't helped the team in their MAAC games. Attendance is decreasing and unless we go 7-1 the remainder of the season, there's little reason for optimism for next season.
If the team continues its' nonwinning ways, next year's season ticket sales will decrease. TV networks won't want to have anything to do with Fairfield games.
I would guess from their encounters, Sydney would be able to read Doris' body language and know he wasn't given a contract extension at his salary so we could be the doormats of the MAAC. If Sydney doesn't turn things around the rest of this season -- I'm expecting to see Cornell, Dartmouth, Savannah State, and UMass-Lowell as our OOC home games next season so Sydney can point to an improved record. (SJ's salary and length of contract will get him at least one more season --- just too expensive to part ways at the end of this season; regardless of what happens the rest of the year.)
Desperate people do desperate things and with a 4-19 record so far this season; the number of open offers we still have sure looks like the actions of a desperate man to me right now. Sydney must have severely misjudged the abilities of several of the players on our current roster (plus signed recruits) or the type of personnel required to be successful in the MAAC if the staff feels additional recruits are required to field a contending MAAC team next season.
Desperation? We will have no seniors next year and are offering kids who will come in as upperclassmen. We know we need a 2G, so offering one shouldn't be a shock. We have been soft inside defensively, so offering a rebounding, high-motor big seems reasonable.
Not sure what the difference is between getting transfers like Grennan, Wade, Sanders (for just one year), or offering a JUCO -- does anyone remember Kim Fisher?
I know sometimes we look at a junior college kid differently, which really isn't fair since we don't know these kids at all. If they're good enough to play here and do their school work, then I don't see why not.
We also must consider that every school in our conference would take a junior college player if the kid fit a need. We have to be prepared to the same.
JUCO's, Transfers and 5th year seniors have made a major impact on the MAAC. We need to get players from all these avenues. Juco's typically come with immediate Scoring potential. There is one position we do not have on this team and thats a 3G. A player that is around 6-4, and can score inside and outside with guard like Ballhandling and passing skills. IMO, JUCO's are loaded with those type of players.

Like I said a day ago in a previous thread, "You Can't Make This Up!" Wow, a surprise a day right? Maybe you're right 76, this is a move of desparation. But it least it proves Sydney and staff are not just sitting around on their you know whats, and at least they are trying. Misjudgement of talent on the squad that he has now? Maybe, but to be fair another year of obvservation is needed before the talent acquired is completely written off IMO. And is this saying he already has lost faith in the group coming in NEXT YEAR? Who knows what the thinking is. Of course one of the players coming in next year (a PF by the way) did manage to throw in 43 points last night in a game! But this is interesting for sure I agree.
That's what I think also...and that does not reflect well on the coaching staff. It's becoming a circus or soap opera... and Sydney's lack of communication makes it all the worst for him.
Not fair to these kids ..and guess what you will have after next year ..more dismissals and new player .. 9 so far have left 9 and now what ..another 4 or 5 Rediculous
It remains to be seen, but if there is a loss of some players...is Sydney admitting he underestimated the caliber of talent needed to be competitive in the MAAC, or maybe he's seeing the difficulty of recruiting for the MAAC when you don't have Ivy prestige as a selling point? Unfortunately for him, memories are short and his past Princeton accomplishments seem so long ago. As they say...you are only as good as your last project (or game in this case).
This is no different than any other year. Recruiting does not stop just because we have got commitments. There are always reasons why players don’t show on the roster for the following year.... I count 15 from the recent past:
Extra year of Prep School – Fields, Adam Jones, Davis Not Eligible – Kevin Thomas Injuries/Health – Van Nes, Keegan Hyland, Nero Family Issue – Matthews Transfer-out – Fields, Mikulic, Jamal Turner, Shimeek Johnson, Jeremy Reedal, Nate Hawkins Graduated - Crawford
IMO, the number to follow is not 13 scholarships….. it’s that we have 7 potential guards. Those 7 guards will change.
