And Sydney was himself a guard, so how is it that we have so many that are not meeting expectations? You would think he knows qualities of a good one when he sees one.
This is no different than any other year. Recruiting does not stop just because we have got commitments. There are always reasons why players don’t show on the roster for the following year.... I count 15 from the recent past:
Extra year of Prep School – Fields, Adam Jones, Davis Not Eligible – Kevin Thomas Injuries/Health – Van Nes, Keegan Hyland, Nero Family Issue – Matthews Transfer-out – Fields, Mikulic, Jamal Turner, Shimeek Johnson, Jeremy Reedal, Nate Hawkins Graduated - Crawford
IMO, the number to follow is not 13 scholarships….. it’s that we have 7 potential guards. Those 7 guards will change.
I hate to see the kids run off the team - that's clearly going to happen. There should be more of a commitment to them. The current team is, other than MB, SJs. It's more understandable that SJ transitioned ECs recruits. When he's going to do that to his own, it's a little sleazy IMO. SJ made the decision to bring them on. If he screwed that up, then fingers should be pointed at him - not the players. If he gets away with it, fingers should be pointed at Gene. It's not a fantast basketball team.
I would agree that kids should not be run off the team, if they have done EVERYTHING to improve themselves. However if kids are not improving and its due to not working hard enough, then that another story. This is not Little League, Its Division-1. Also 3 other players who left quickly…. Buchbinder, Devin Johnson and Rich Flemming. That’s now 18 players in the last 7 years. Turnover of 2 players a year is not necessarily a bad thing. I cannot see players being satisfied with being 6th and 7th string on the Depth chart.
The turnover is roster mismanagement by SJ. Adding Jucos or transfers should have been done last year to go for it with Needham or to offset his loss. Adding 12 freshman & sophomores is a recipe for disaster - hence 4-19. At 5-7 minutes a game, any one of our under classman could have flourished. When they have to play 35, they are exposed. Somebody else deserves a shot. The albatross of a contract killing us now and will in the future. He's a lame duck.
Not to defend the situation, but, let's keep in mind that SJ is not the only one evaluating these recruits. Perhaps SJ needs to hire a better recruiter onto his staff???

You are correct here, Head Coaches do virtually no recruiting. Its all in the assistants. HC's are the closers in the living rooms.

Joe, Bob, your unwavering support for Sydney is admirable. This situation that Sydney is creating is pathetic and needs to end. He is in his 3rd year and its getting worse, not better. Again, with the $ he is getting this is an epic failure...
