I would focus on the job at hand and not conduct an all out lobbying campaign for the next job. Once I am done with the job that that I am paid handsomely for and the season is over, then and only then do I start my all out pursuit for my next opportunity. Pretty simple!
Ed lost me when he traveled up to Providence during the week of the MAAC Tournament. The most important week in recent Fairfield basketball history, one that would have forever sealed his place as our most beloved coach, and he is off meeting with the PC administration. Unforgivable in my mind.
I would driven two hours to interview for my dream job. Your expectations for somebody connected to the University for 4 years over his hometown program for life is unrealistic. If there is one thing you can't argue about Ed is his character. You're entitled to your opinion but to call this unforgivable is ridiculous to me.
Congrats to Ed and PC. I read their message board today and wait for the day that we'll all be that euphoric over Fairfield basketball.

Wow, just a very sad commentary on society and the workplace. If I was in the middle of major trial or settlement proceeding and I decided to take a day off to pursue my next job, I would deserve to be fired. It is amazing what we let the NCAA and college coaches get away with. We have set such a low standard.
Nailed it Stago. For as big of a personality and as much dedication as Ed appeared to have, he sure left tire marks on his way outta town.
Im not saying Ed shouldnt have taken the job, just the way it all unfolded really screwed the team, fans, and program and for that, I will not be a card carrying member of the "Ed is God" club.

Folks: Cooley did a great job: the issue is deeper than Ed----providence is a catholic school, not Jesuit like FU, but a great school like ours--but the administration wants to have a positive men's BB team so it does what it does to get to that goal---I have said this before, as long as we have a tunnel vision administration and one that does not seem to invest in our program for success we will always struggle. We will have a good year now and then, but ED knew it was a fleeting thing as this program of ours has never built a consistent dedication to winning---I wish it was different but it is not---start with no gym on campus,to tolerating a coach who is abysmal to everything in between and we are left with what we have----FRUSTRATION!!!!!!!!!!

So just to get this straight because I don't remember all the details...did Ed leave after the Marist win to go up to PC for an interview and then come back for the St. Peter's loss? Or did he go to PC for the interview after the Colorado St win in the NIT, but before the loss to Kent St. Maybe St. Peters would have beat us anyway considering they knocked off Iona the next night.

The sadder commentary is burying a guy you don't know about a story where you probably don't know all the facts from behind a computer. As a lawyer I'd imagine that would get you fired first.

I was told from an insider source that Ed accepted the job on the Friday before the MAAC Tourney. On Saturday workers emptied his office. The team was shell-shocked, but life sucks sometimes. Unfortunately, it's a dog eat dog world...
Yup. Once a coach has achieved sainthood, how dare anybody blaspheme (see Jim Calhoun). Congrats to Ed and Providence. I'll be pulling for them. But he ain't coming back and it's time to move on.
We have moved on, but it's ok to give Ed some kudos. Talk about moaners and groaners. We can acknowledge this. It's ok. Fairfield is usually brought up when the media talks of him. I know we haven't been used to that the last 3 years. Geesh...
Ain't moaning and groaning at all. Said in another thread that I've been watching and reading all things college basketball, especially A10 and Big East, most of this past week. Haven't heard or read Fairfield being mentioned at all with regard to Ed Cooley. Maybe I missed something though. I do give kudos to Ed and Providence. Great story. I will be rooting for them in the NCAAs.

After graduating in 1994, Cooley spent the next 12 seasons as an assistant, the final nine at Boston College under Al Skinner. Cooley and Skinner are still close and spoke before Saturday night's game. In April 2006, Cooley accepted his first head coaching job at Fairfield, a Division I team in Connecticut. Under Cooley, the Stags improved in each of his five seasons, culminating with a school-record 25 victories and an NIT berth in 2011.....

As a Doctor I will make an analogy ---you guys are fighting over a patient with a cold when he has a cancer--its not about what Ed did, its about what we have not done for years and continue not to do!
