Stags FT% stagnant compared to D1 trend

Pomeroy has an article stating D1 schools shot their free throws with more accuracy this past regular season than ever before: ... D-I teams have made 69.82 percent of their attempts from the free throw line. According to the NCAA record book, the previous best was the 69.7 percent made in the 1979 season...

In a bit of a statistical oddity, the Stags shot 68.5% from the charity stripe in both '12-'13 and '13-'14.

Even sadder, after SJ often lamented our inability to put the ball in the basket when we had open looks in '12-'13 --- our FG% was worse in '13-'14 than in '12-'13. This season we shot 39.8% from the field and in the '12-'13 season we shot 42.3%

I'm sure part of the Stags' lower FG % was the heavy reliance on inexperienced players, but it was also in part due to a higher percentage of shots coming from 3 pt land.

I would say that the 2 biggest reasons for the lower FG% were:

- We had a lot less transition layups this year. We only had 140 steals this year compared to 240 steals last year.
- We had 3 guards last year that were good passers (Needham, Wade and Nickerson) that led to a lot of easy baskets. This year KJ was the only player that gave us good assist numbers.

We certainly had much better shooters this year, but that does not matter if the Passing game is not there. So what type of players make steals and make a lot of asssits...... Guards. And our guards were inexperienced, and in some cases not talented enough.
