You may recall that around this time two years ago we had a thread devoted to a player similar to Josh. Like Ryan Oliver, Josh Hugh has publicly stated he going to choose between Siena and Fairfield. Some people think Siena may have the edge, but with the gradation of Barrow, perhaps Sydney can work his usual magic. Josh has stated that he wants to go to a Catholic School and wants to play within 3 hours of Kennedy Airport which has direct flights to his home in Ireland. Originally Fairfield, Fordham, Marist, Siena and St. Peters were on his list but a recent tweet suggests its down to Fairfield and Siena.

Josh is a developing player with unlimited potential. A 16 year old Senior, Hugh is already 6’8” and some believe he has the potential to be well over 7 feet tall before he finishes growing. An aggressive shot blocker, Josh had more blocks than points scored in 21 games this season, and he averages more than 1.8 blocks per game. Josh’s abilities as a scorer are exceeded only by his passing and ball handling skills. An improving foul shooter, Josh recently hit 100% of his foul shots in a game versus St. Francis. In addition to his foul shot in that game, he successfully converted a foul shot in 7 other games this season. To go along with his existing offensive skills, JH is working hard to develop a hook shot. He is also aggressively working on improving his leaping ability so that he can dunk the ball. In a recent game versus Notre Dame, Hugh recorded an unconventional double-double with 10 blocks and 11 turnovers. Hugh possesses skills on par with several NBA players and has been compared to Steve Kerr and Shakeem O’Neil with regards to his rebounding and three point shooting ability. Currently Siena, Marist, Fordham and Fairfield are actively pursuing this developing player. Here are some quotes from my conversation with Josh after his recent loss to the Spartans.
"Apart from the Spartans 24 fields goals, we held them scoreless in the first half."
“The three point shot I hit against the Spartans was the first one I hit since my last one.”
“I had 7 blocks versus the Spartans, that’s exactly double of what I had versus Notre Dame.”
“Any time our team scores more than 50 points and hold the other team below 50 points, we almost always win.”
“Sometimes my best move is coming out of the game.”
“I got 1 “D” and 4 “F’s last semester. This semester I am going to try not to spend so much time on one subject.”
“My coach thinks I am a better fit academically for Siena, but I would still like to consider Fairfield if I they accept me.”
“Some things about basketball I just don’t question. Like why they call so many fouls on me and why there is always a big number in the TO column whenever I play. I mean, I never call time-out, but last game they had me down for 9 TO’s. Strange…”
“I set a league record this season with 11 rebounds on 1 possession. I also hit nearly 10% of my shots during that sequence.”
While Siena may have the edge in this battle, I still have hopes that we might see Josh in the Stag Uniform.
